The Japan Meteorological Agency now says there is a higher chance of a magnitude 8 or larger earthquake along the northern Pacific coast in the coming days, especially from Hokkaido down through the Sanriku coast. This is not a random internet rumor. This is an official advisory from the agency that monitors Japan’s trenches and tsunami risk every day. The advisory covers 182 cities and towns along the Pacific side, including coastal areas that were already hit by tsunami waves after the 7.6 quake. In the worst government scenario, a megaquake in this segment could send tsunami waves up to around 30 meters high, affect millions of people, and cause tens of trillions of yen in damage.
