My Japanese Learning Journey: 8 years living in Japan and this is the result after consistent 1.5 years tutoring lessons. I’ve come to accept that everyone’s journey will look different, and it’s useless to feel “behind.” Learning Japanese takes money and time, and not every resident has that luxury. We also have different long-term goals, so dedicating yourself to learning one of the toughest languages in the world is a big decision, especially if you had no idea beforehand how it would influence your stay in the country. I started these lessons without overthinking it and, frankly, without expecting much from my skills. I just kept going, eager to communicate. Then I randomly came across a video of my first ever lesson and decided to share this, because I’ve seen incredible progress in communicating my thoughts. So to anyone out there feeling “behind,” here’s a reminder: a journey of a thousand miles starts with step one.
