BLBeck, Bogert & Appice performing “Superstition” live in 1973. Jeff Beck had wanted to collaborate with the bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice since the first time he saw them in 1967 with Vanilla Fudge. The duo had a really aggressive hard rock style that was pretty rare at the time. Obviously due to their commitments to Vanilla Fudge, Beck had to wait until they were free from their contracts. So, in November of 1969 after the first run of the Jeff Beck Group had dissolved, Beck and Peter Grant arranged to finalize contracts with Bogert and Appice. However, on November 12, 1969, Beck was in a serious car accident leaving him with a very bad skull fracture. Due to this accident his plans with the duo were put on hold.
In the meantime, Bogert and Appice went on to form Cactus, a supergroup of their own, with guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder & Detroit Wheels and the Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day from The Amboy Dukes. This lineup went on to release three albums together, featuring some really solid heavy rock sounds. Towards the end of 1971 the personnel would change with McCarty and Day leaving the group, and the original run of Cactus put out one more album in 1972 before calling it a quits.
Similarly, after recovering from his injuries, Beck had formed another run of the Jeff Beck Group which also disbanded in 1972, around the same time as Cactus. Beck went on one more tour in the US with different personnel before finally forming a power trio with Bogert and Appice. Their debut album released in 1973, and the band toured the UK, US, Japan, and Europe for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, the group would turn out to be short lived, with rumors of their split starting in May of 1974, before the completion of their second album. Together the group only released on studio album and one live album both in 1973.
