In a heart-wrenching incident, Toi Market, a bustling hub of commerce in Kibera, was consumed by a fierce overnight fire. Traders woke up to find their livelihoods reduced to ashes, as the flames ravaged the entire market. The fire erupted at 1am on June 11, catching everyone by surprise and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The current social reality might suggest that there’s less room for complexity than ever before. Say the wrong thing, and you’re done. Show a shadow of support for a questionable practice, and you’re cancelled. So you keep it close and play it safe. And in the travel world it means we stick to the waterfalls and cherry blossoms, food excursions, and feet in sand. But the reality is that travel at its core is about culture, which means it is fundamentally about people. People who are complex. Countries that are historied. Practices that are imperfect. We all know traveling at its best should not be our break from the world but our immersion into it. Into all of its messiness. So this is an invitation to make mistakes — to asking questions, to trying new things, and to doing better. This is also forgiveness to myself, who has done or said or thought all these things… but who, through travel, has committed to evolving and trying again, anew. What’s something about travel and tourism you’re conflicted with or want to know more about? I don’t have the answers but I’m sure together we can figure it out. ➡️EN: Visiting Kibera in Nairobi, the biggest slum in Africa, was a must for me😱 You know what I found interesting? That the local kids seemed very happy and joyful, full of life. Despite of not having almost anything material, often not even having food to eat, they seemed happier than the kids in the Western world which have hundreds of (unnecessary) toys and (way too much) food🙊If you ever visit Nairobi, I highly recommend you to do a guided tour of Kibera with my local friends from non-profit @kcoop.organization . Eye-opening, to say the least! I do believe that the majority of parents and children in the Western world should see the real life of the local families in Kibera to learn what is really important in life and how to be grateful for very little🙏 😍😍😍 ➡️SK: keď som bola v Nairobi, musela som ísť pozrieť aj do najväčšieho afrického slumu Kibera😱 Vieš, čo mi tam prišlo zaujímavé? Miestne deti tam vyzerali fakt šťastné a veselé, plné života. Napriek tomu, že nemajú skoro nič materiálne, často nemajú ani len čo jesť, vyzerali šťastnejšie ako deti zo západného sveta, ktoré vlastnia stovky (nepotrebných) hračiek a majú až (príliš veľa) jedla🙊 Ak niekedy navštíviš Nairobi, naozaj ti odporúčam ísť na prehliadku Kibery spolu so sprievodcom od mojich miestnych kamarátov z KCOOP Organization. Určite ti to otvorí oči! Osobne si myslím, že väčšina rodičov a aj detí v našom západnom svete by potrebovala vidieť život rodín v Kibere, aby sa naučili, čo je v živote naozaj dôležité a ako si vedieť vážiť aj to málo🙏 😍😍😍 #kibera #kiberastories #nairobikenya #dnescestujem #cestovanie #kiberanairobi #nairobidiaries #collab

She gave them a second chance at life, but as they grew, the cycle continued…more litters, more stress, and no end in sight. This week, @kysa_254 partnered with Garrett and @kspca to spay & neuter four of her cats—preventing more than 4,000 kittens from being born in just four years. 😲✨ But KYSA’s work doesn’t start or stop with spay/neuter. We work alongside residents like Garrett to help them provide better care for their animals in their own community.
