I know the plight of the ASHA workers of Kerala. On one of my tours, I met and had long discussions with some of them. They are proud, brave women who performed heroic services for the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet today, they are protesting for their basic rights. They said that initially, it used to be voluntary work for them with flexible hours. Now, they have to be available 24/7. They have to go whenever they receive a call. If they are asking for a reasonable raise in their honorarium after working for years—at least 5 lakhs as a retirement amount—what is wrong with it? Is it not their right? Their work never stops: even when they reach home after completing their duty, they have to take care of their families. Yet they don't get the recognition they deserve from the government. In the same way, the LDF government pays Rs 1600 per month as a welfare pension to over 62 lakh beneficiaries. But the pension is being politicized.
