This week we are celebrating pups Tofu and Tempeh turning two years old! 🥹 Life with these girls has been… a lot. The first year or so, we weren’t sure we could do it. True to Great Pyrenees form, they tested every boundary and had us making constant adjustments to our (relatively new and very expensive!) fencing over 14 acres of land. But at some point this year, there was thankfully a mellowing that has made life with them SO much easier. (Plus SpotOn collars, which have been a lifesaver.) Tofu and Tempeh are the happiest, floofiest, silliest girls. They love their animal family so much, and spend their time watching over everyone, in addition to lots of lounging and log carrying. 😂 They are beyond delighted to see the humans here and always give their friends the warmest welcomes. They are gentle, super smart, giant babies, and thankfully the escapism has stopped (though we’re still always on alert and the property damage is still in full force!). 😅 Happy birthday, polar bears. (To get out ahead of anyone who doesn’t understand LGDs this is legit their heaven, and even still, with dangerously cold temps we will not leave them out for extended periods of time. They are beloved family animals AND invaluable farm workers and we’d never put their safety at risk during weather…we know our dogs and we know how to keep them safe! When they come in to warm up and turn it off, they can be found taking a break next to the woodstove and being tortured (aka loved, squished, and snuggled) by our kids.) . . . Everyone say hi to Sven! 🐻‍❄️ Sven is one of our three livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) that live here on the ranch and protect all the goats, horses, chickens, cats, and us 😅 We live in the northern Rockies so where we live is also where bears (yes grizzlies), wolves, mountain lions, and many other predators call home 🐺 The guard dogs allow us all to live in relative peace with each other and their work is invaluable. They are heroes and we couldn’t live here without them 🫶 Sven is only 3 but he is already a formidable guard dog and takes his job very seriously. It’s in his blood and everything he does is pure instinct. Including setting up his no-fly zone 🦅 Sven is 1/2 Italian Maremma and 1/2 Great Pyrenees. He is very vocal and loves to tell us how he is feeling through his language of whines, howls, and groans. He has a very fluffy tail that he’s constantly trying to take you down with and a sweet personality 🫶 He is very fast and has loads of energy. Even after a long night of guarding, he’s always happy to meet me in the morning and share with me everything that happened. He also loves his little catpack but can’t quite bring himself to relax and cuddle with them 😸 Sven loves doing tricks and adds in his own flair with each one. He’s a total theater kid. He loves to find high points and observe and always knows exactly what’s going on. He also has severe FOMO (fear of missing out) so wherever you are, he is too. 😂 Love ya Sven! 🐻‍❄️

A little over two years ago, we brought baby Bear home. I had researched LGDs for years, but was so nervous that I’d do something wrong and we’d have a massive headache on our hands. Though highly-specialized and refined through thousands of years of breeding, selection, and symbiosis, the one thing I’ve learned through raising Bear is that LGD are just dogs. They are to be trained, loved, respected, and understood just as house dogs are. Are there specific instincts and needs at play with these breeds? Absolutely! But the same can be said of any other breed of dog, too. Bear’s needs and instincts just look a bit different than a more mainstream breed, but at the end of the day, he is our family pet as much as he is a protector. Raising Bear alongside our growing kids was one of the best choices we ever made, not just for our farm, but for our family. He’s their constant companion and protector outside, and I sleep soundly knowing he’s watching over us at night. I don’t think there’s a more iconic duo than a little girl who is so beloved by her giant dog. 🐶 Research reminds us that livestock guarding dogs (LGDs) are a powerful tool for human–wildlife coexistence — but they are not impact-free. A 2020 review in the Journal of Vertebrate Biology looked at published evidence on how LGDs affect wildlife. The key takeaway - while LGDs can reduce livestock losses and lower the need for lethal predator control, they can also trigger unintended ecological effects. Across the literature, LGDs were frequently reported to chase — and sometimes kill — wildlife, and most of the affected species were non-target species (i.e., not the predators causing livestock damage). In short: benefits can come together with side effects, and those side effects are still rarely quantified. Why this matters? Video from Switzerland shows a harsh reality many people don’t consider — these dogs are trained to protect “their” animals and territory from everything they perceive as a threat, not only wolves or other large predators. That can include people and other dogs as well. In the field, an LGD’s job is simple: deter first, escalate if needed. Freyja + Odin = pretty little babies 🐾 • These five have brought us so much joy over the last ten weeks, and watching our big man and sweet girl become parents and start training their brood in the ways of guardianship has been amazing. • LGDs (Livestock Guardian Dogs) are very special breeds, depended on in areas like ours with heavy predator activity to keep livestock animals safe. Their instincts - to bond with the animals in their care instead of chase them, make independent decisions about threats, and put those threats down if necessary - are truly special. Freyja and Odin are not just friends here, they have the most important job on the place keeping everyone else safe. • These five begin to go to their new homes/jobs this week after a solid start with mom and dad, with every promise of living up to the potential of their parents. It’s going to be so hard to say goodbye, but it’s a beautiful thing, knowing even more animals will be safe as they become protectors in their own right. • I couldn’t let them go without giving them a permanent place in the feed though, so please enjoy the ridiculous cuteness of Loki and his sisters, Nyx, Saga, Skadi, and Hela!
