A 3200-megapixel eye to the sky for the first time ever 👀 On April 15, the NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory team pointed the newly-installed LSST Camera at the night sky for the first time. Hundreds of staff, in-person and online, watched together as the very first pixels from a complete Rubin Observatory appeared on screen! #RubinRecap2025 These first images marked the start of on-sky commissioning with the LSST Camera: the months-long phase to focus, tune, adjust, test, fix, and repeat until every mirror, sensor, and motion control system performs reliably to standards required for Rubin's 10-year survey. This process prepares Rubin to capture hundreds of images and detect millions of changes every night for the next decade. Once the camera proved it could see the sky? The first images captured by the 3.2-billion-pixel camera were taken by the LSST Camera installed at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. It is the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy and is designed to take extremely detailed images of the night sky. With a resolution of 3.2 gigapixels, a single photograph is so large that it would require hundreds of ultra-HD television screens to display it at full resolution. The purpose of this camera is to conduct the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), a 10-year survey that will repeatedly scan the entire southern sky. Btw this is my first video since becoming a mom!! 🥹🫶 The Rubin Observatory has released its first look images and they’re already breaking records in depth and resolution. 👀 Located atop Cerro Pachón in Chile, this next-gen survey telescope is home to the largest digital camera ever built: 3.2 gigapixels. Yes, giga. 😱 📷 These inaugural images were taken using the observatory’s commissioning camera (ComCam)—a smaller sibling of the full LSST camera—but still capable of capturing breathtaking views of the cosmos. We’re talking unprecedented wide-field resolution across several square degrees of sky per image. ✨ The Rubin Observatory will carry out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), photographing the entire visible sky every few nights over the next 10 years. That’s 20 terabytes of data per night!!!!! Resulting in the largest movie of the universe ever made. 🎥 💥 Nerd stats: • Effective aperture: 8.4 meters • Field of view: 3.5 degrees (that’s the area of 40 full moons!) • Image resolution: 3,200 megapixels • Survey goal: detect transients (like supernovae), near-Earth asteroids, and even help probe dark matter & dark energy via gravitational lensing and large-scale structure. Simonyi Survey Telescope’un üç aynalı tasarımı ve teleskobun dakikalar yerine saniyeler içinde yön değiştirebilmesi, gökyüzünü adeta bir güvenlik kamerası gibi tarayarak 10 milyon galaksiyi tek karede yakalamasını sağlıyor. Karanlık madde ve karanlık enerji araştırmalarında çığır açması beklenen bu sistem, her gece terabaytlarca astrofotografi verisi üreterek süpernova patlamalarından Dünya’ya yakın asteroitlere kadar gökcisimlerinin parlaklık, hareket ve titreşim değişimlerini kaydediyor. Gökyüzünün tamamını üç-dört gecede bir tarayan Rubin Observatory’nin “fark görüntüleme” tekniği, iki yıl içinde beş milyon yeni asteroit keşfiyle bugüne kadar yapılan tüm çalışmaların ötesine geçecek.
