Child Labor in Fast Fashion @kahaniwalishivani We all know that one of the reasons why fast fashion is so cheap is because fashion brands outsource their clothes and have them "assembled" in countries where labor laws are barely there or are not strictly enforced. Due to such lax laws, these brands are off the hook and are not accountable for fair wages, safety, health conditions, and the well-being of their employees. To continuously producing cheap clothes, brands find cheap labor in developing countries and mostly have no long-term contracts with manufacturers. These manufacturers have a large number of employees working in cramped, dirty, and unsafe buildings with little to no rights. Such places with illegal working conditions are called sweatshops, and unfortunately, such places have children working there too. If you read articles on sweatshops, you would find that children are preferred labor because they don't demand much, and they can't stand up for themselves, so it's easy to exploit them. It wouldn't be fair to say that all brands are following unethical practices, but the chances are if we are buying from a brand that churns out a fashion collection at the drop of a hat at cheap prices, then it needs further inquiry. Your company cannot ignore these anymore 1️⃣ 48-HOUR WEEKLY WORK LIMIT No company can force you to work more than 48 hours/week. If they make you work extra: ➡️ Every single extra hour = DOUBLE SALARY There is no negotiation or workaround anymore. This protects you from unfair overtime exploitation. 2️⃣ GRATUITY AFTER JUST 1 YEAR Earlier: You had to complete 5 years in a company to receive gratuity. Now: ➡️ Even contract employees and fixed-term workers get gratuity after 1 year. This means your short-term job also gives you long-term benefits. 3️⃣ BASIC SALARY MUST BE 50% OF CTC If your basic salary is currently very low and allowances are high — that will change.
