Every winter, when Lake Simcoe freezes thick enough, a temporary ice road opens between the mainland and Georgina Island, home to the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation.
The road allows residents and visitors to drive directly across the frozen lake instead of taking the ferry which is closed this time of year.
Ice thickness is carefully monitored, and the road only opens once it’s safe for vehicles.
It’s one of the most unique winter transportation routes in Ontario. ❄️
