Tom Goldtooth told me the story of the Black Snake Prophecy by the fire the night I arrived. And so when Alberta’s premier talks about “separating” and taking the land with her, she’s not reclaiming anything, she’s doubling down on theft. Because let’s be real: She’s not just trying to walk away. She’s trying to take the good land, the water, and the resources, too, land that was never Alberta’s to begin with. This isn’t sovereignty. It’s settler greed rebranded. So no, I won’t be celebrating “Canada” today. I’ll be honoring the Indigenous Nations whose lands were never ceded, whose treaties were never respected, and who are still protecting the Earth from settler destruction, including from provincial leaders who wouldn’t last one minute without Indigenous land under their feet.
