In this intense scene from Landman, an oil worker confronts a woman who asks him to explain how wind turbines are bad for the environment. He fires back by pointing out the massive diesel burned to mix concrete, manufacture steel, haul materials, assemble with 450-foot cranes, and lubricate and winterize the turbines. He argues that in their 20-year lifespan, wind turbines won’t even offset their own carbon footprint, and he calls out solar panels and Tesla batteries for similar issues. He notes the grid can’t handle a sudden shift to electric power, and our 120-year petroleum infrastructure supports nearly everything—from roads and car tires to lipstick, plastics, cell phones, and even artificial heart valves. He warns we’ll run out of oil before finding a viable replacement, and if Exxon truly believed wind was the future, they’d be investing heavily in it. He concludes that extracting oil is the world’s most dangerous job, done out of necessity, not love.
