Lee Morgan’s mastery of the trumpet was unparalleled....his fate unimaginable...his legacy indelible. A prodigy, Morgan was a professional musician at age 15, and at 18 he was a featured soloist with the Dizzy Gillespie big band. He began leading his own recording sessions in the late 1950s, at first exhibiting a style modeled on Clifford Brown’s trumpeting. Even then, however, idiosyncratic elements of phrasing and expression appeared in his playing, elements that were integrated into a personal style during his first tenure (1958–61) with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He recorded his hit “The Sidewinder” before returning to Blakey (1964–65), after which he led his own groups for the rest of his short life. His skyrocketing career was cut short, at age 33, one cold February night in 1972 at a Manhattan club called Slug’s. He was shot to death by his 46-year-old common-law wife. Remembering the great Art Blakey who was born on this day in 1919. He was known for his brilliant playing and for the Jazz Messengers, a band that he led for 35 years. The sounds of his cymbals and drums were unique, and he played them with rare sensitivity. Many of the young musicians he trained in his bands went on to become major jazz figures themselves. As a drummer Blakey accompanied soloists with lively accents, and he played solos with cross-rhythms and drum rolls that began as quiet tremblings and grew into frenzied explosions. His own playing and his aggressive bands, which played original songs composed by his musicians, were important developments of the hard bop tradition. He hired young musicians for his Jazz Messengers, and he gave them valuable experience as jazz performers. Over the years his groups included such notable jazz artists as Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Jackie McLean, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and Wynton Marsalis. Here, he is performing “A Night In Tunisia” with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass live in 1958.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Moanin. In the ‘60s, when John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman were defining the concept of a jazz avant-garde, few knowledgeable observers would have guessed that in another 30 years the music’s mainstream would virtually bypass their innovations, in favor of the hard bop style that free jazz had apparently supplanted. As it turned out, many listeners who had come to love jazz as a sophisticated manifestation of popular music were unable to accept the extreme esotericism of the avant-garde; their tastes were rooted in the core elements of “swing” and “blues,” characteristics found in abundance in the music of the Jazz Messengers, the quintessential hard bop ensemble led by drummer Art Blakey. In the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, when artists on the cutting edge were attempting to transform the music, Blakey continued to play in more or less the same bag he had since the ‘40s, when his cohorts included the likes of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Fats Navarro. By the ‘80s, the evolving mainstream consensus had reached a point of overwhelming approval in regard to hard bop: this is what jazz is, and Art Blakey — as its longest-lived and most eloquent exponent — was its master. Remembering the great Lee Morgan who was born this week in 1938. A prodigy known as the most expressive trumpet virtuoso of the bop idiom and one of its most popular performers, Morgan was a professional musician at age 15, and at 18 he was a featured soloist with the Dizzy Gillespie big band. His attack was aggressive; half-valved, slurred, and stuttered notes lent expressive character to his lines. Emotional complexities, from exuberance to dark moods, were typical of his improvising, as evidenced by his melodic intricacy and great rhythmic poise. He began leading his own recording sessions in the late 1950s, at first exhibiting a style modeled on Clifford Brown’s trumpeting. Even then, however, idiosyncratic elements of phrasing and expression appeared in his playing, elements that were integrated into a personal style during his first tenure with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Here, he is performing “Are You Real?” with Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Walter Jr. Davis on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass and Art Blakey on drums live in France, 1959.
