The ability to get up and down from the floor predicts how long you’ll live. A study following over 4,000 people for 25 years found that those who could get down to the floor and back up with minimal support had dramatically better survival rates compared to those who struggled (Araújo et al., 2025). People who scored highest on the sitting-rising test had a 3.7% death rate over the study period, compared to 42.1% for those who needed significant assistance. Using a chair, doorway, or wall for support lets you practise the movement safely. And practising daily builds the leg strength and mobility you need. How to do this safely: 1. Place a folded yoga mat, cushion, or blanket on the floor for knee padding (or use carpet) 2. Position a sturdy chair, table, doorway, or wall in front of you for support 3. Hold on with both hands 4. Lower one knee to the ground 5. Lower the second knee 6. Reverse the movement to stand back up 7. Practise daily Start with support. Build strength. Progress gradually. What I notice when people do this: At first, they need heavy support and move slowly. After a week of daily practice, they move more confidently. After a month, many need less support.
