MIThe word “balanced” is so loaded and inaccurate for this group of practices utilized by these curriculums. And yet, 60% of schools in the U.S. still use one or both of these harmful, not evidenced based curriculums. Balanced literacy is also not a happy medium between Whole Language theory and Science of Reading research. It is a clever rebrand of Whole Language.

_TSome literacy group activities we've been loving recently 🩷 still keeping it nice and simple, everything that is out for rotations has been taught explicitly. The activities are aimed at giving students a chance to consolidate concepts.
The little phonics colouring sheets have been an absolute hit. They are now available in my Google Drive or let me know if you'd like the link!
This week the phonics activities will start to appear a little more now that we've done lots of practice as a class, I'll share some of those soon ☀️

BI📚 In honor of Read Across America Week, we’ve been adding a few extra early literacy activities into our day.
Before kids begin reading words, they first learn to hear the individual sounds inside them. This skill is called phonemic awareness, and it’s one of the foundations of early reading.
Activities like this help children:
• hear the sounds in a word
• map those sounds
• and begin connecting them to letters
When learning feels hands-on and playful, it often clicks more easily for little learners.

REAt the Senate Hearing examining the impact of technology on America's youth, Dr. Horvath testified that for the first time in modern history, children are underperforming their parents on attention, memory, literacy, numeracy and executive function. Despite spending more time in school.
That should stop every parent in their tracks.
The data points to the mass introduction of technology into classrooms, a shift that quietly started delivering worse learning outcomes. Learning is fundamentally social and human. And learning environments built around screens disrupt this.
This isn’t a call to reject technology. It’s a call to shape the learning environment to support the way we actually learn. More real dialogue. Sustained attention. Deeper reading. Productive struggle. Human feedback loops. Because in a future shaped by AI, the developmental outcomes that matter most aren’t digital, they’re deeply human.

MYI NEED communities across America to take the literacy crisis seriously and put resources towards effective, early intervention that is preventative and proactive.
It works! I witness it everyday.
What does effective early intervention look like?
Good Starting Points:
Universal Screening for all students. DIBELS and Acadience are good starting points.
Diagnostics when we see gaps such as the Core Phonics Survey.
Spelling and LANGUAGE inventories. Check out Chad Hulmes work and screeners for Pre-K/K students.
This is only one part of the puzzle. We can have all the data in the world but teacher knowledge and expertise is where we will see meaningful results.
How can we support teachers and parents to make data driven instructional plans to fill in gaps? Well we start by educating ourselves in what the research says and we have decades of evidence to lead the way. We’ve got this!
. 🔹 International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Recorded Webinars
IDA has a vast library of recorded webinars covering structured literacy topics, dyslexia, effective reading instruction, and teacher standards. These are excellent for PD hours and practical strategies. 
🔹 Waterford.org Free Science of Reading Webinars
Waterford offers a series of free, on-demand webinars aligned to SOR components like:
• Phonological awareness
• Phonics and decoding
• Fluency
• Vocabulary & comprehension
• Language concepts & communication
These are practical, classroom-ready sessions you can watch anytime.

edWeb hosts a variety of free webinars (often with certificates) on science of reading fundamentals. One example includes Structured Literacy Instruction: What to Teach and How.
