Can you believe a small portion of that <1% is hidden inside this East TN city? 📍 ETSU University Woods, TN 30 acres of protected old growth forest with trees that are 200-300+ years old. Sure, this trail system won’t lead you to an epic overlook or a roaring waterfall - but it allows you to step back in time for a moment and admire something we rarely get to see due to widescale logging removing nearly all of our original forests. Any time I get to see old-growth I can’t help but wonder how amazing these ancient mountains must have looked in the past and imagine how it would have felt to walk through them just a few centuries ago. 🤎 #appalachianmountains #oldgrowth #easttennesseestateuniversity #tennessee #easttennessee

The tallest tree in eastern North America can be found from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Historically, these giants could reach heights close to 200 feet, but the tallest remaining specimens are closer to 150 feet. Their multiple-leader crowns are a favorite spot for bald eagles to build their nests.
