LAWhen a dietitian insinuates that white rice is a garbage food with no more nutrition than white sugar, we’ve got issues here. This is Ilana Muhlstein, Beachbody dietitian, trying to sell her new meal delivery service by convincing us (or trying to, at least) that her meals don’t contain white rice, that old trashy filler food that ‘unhealthy’ people eat. Except, rice is a staple food for 50% of the people on this planet. Ooof.

But first, she’s completely wrong about rice being bleached: it isn’t. She’s also using that tiiiiiiired and faulty af strategy of comparing what she feels is a nutritionally void food, to sugar.
Can we stop doing that already? It’s so ridiculous…and misleading.

White rice has macro and micronutrients, and it also contains resistant starch, which our gut bacteria love. Is white rice high in fibre? Nope. But who cares? Does everything we eat have to be full of fibre and nutrition? Nope again.

White rice is cheap and nourishing, and with the price of groceries, it may be one of the only things some people can afford. Why the heck would we make those people feel like their diets are ‘junk,’ because they can’t afford something’better’?
Beachbody coaches live in mansions, and don’t seem to understand what’s actually going on in the world.

In much the same way, when we criticize white rice, we are criticizing and making lesser the cultural food of millions of people. This is completely insensitive and inappropriate…and especially for a dietitian, unacceptable.
