5 Signs You’re Not Talented Enough To Be A D1 Center Mid 1. You think hard work is the only thing that matters. You show up early. You stay late. You grind. I did the same. But effort without direction just makes you tired. D1 center mids don’t just work hard. They work on the exact skills that change games. 2. You don’t play FORWARDS. Safe passes. Sideways touches. Reset. You finish games with 60 touches… And zero impact. I used to think keeping possession meant I played well. College coaches look for the CM who breaks lines. Who risks the vertical pass. Who changes the picture of the game. 3. You react poorly when teammates get mad at your mistakes. One bad touch. One turnover. Now you stop asking for the ball. You hide. I’ve been there. The best center mids demand it again immediately. They don’t shrink. 4. You don’t have one defining weapon. If I asked your coach what separates you… Would he hesitate? Range? Composure? Ball-winning? Final-third creation? D1 mids have something you can’t ignore. 5. You secretly don’t believe you’re that guy. You see other players getting attention. Most players wait too long to focus on these. Here are 8 things I wish I focused on earlier: 1. Playing faster with fewer touches At higher levels, holding the ball too long becomes a liability. Quick, clean decisions are what stand out. 2. Scanning before every touch The best players don’t react — they already know what they’re doing before the ball arrives. 3. Mastering off-ball movement Your positioning and movement without the ball often matters more than what you do on it. 4. Staying composed after mistakes College coaches notice how quickly you reset more than the mistake itself. 5. Valuing consistency over highlights One good moment doesn’t matter if the rest of your game is inconsistent. 6. Understanding your role in a system At ECNL/MLS Next, coaches want players who can execute within structure, not just play freely. 7. Training with real intention Not just finishing sessions — actually focusing on improving specific parts of your game. 8. Treating every game like you’re being evaluated Because at that level, you usually are. We work with serious ECNL & MLS Next players who want to separate themselves and play at the next level. 1. NEVER think the coaches will come to you. Now you probably new that already so the big “never do this” is actually never think that because you are on a “better team” or “win” more than another team that you will get recruited. IT IS ALL ABOUT EXPOSURE. Would you rather adopt a dog after seeing them once or twice or after spending time with them and watching them in all environments? Win, lose, draw, off the field, on the bench, and even amongst other dogs or puppies. Many people, maybe even you hate on ID camps. Yes it would be ideal if they were “free.” But without camps getting seen properly is incredibly difficult. Ask 90% of college players we all went to camps and they all made a huge difference. Now D1 camps of schools you are not the level for especially as a junior are a waste of resources and time in many ways. Now you can’t be mad at coaches for inviting you. Maybe you are the exception to the rule if you are not playing MLS Next or ECNL or maybe that coach will like your style. I was not recruited by any D1 schools but went to a camp and ONE SCHOOL DID LIKE ME. I found a special coach who wanted me. It lead to D1 a full-ride and eventually pro. But it took MANY EMAILS AND MANY ID CAMPS TO FIND THE RIGHT PLACE. You can’t depend on them to come to your games or come to your showcase so if you want a chance go to camp. This is why I want people to start as an 8th grader if they are an elite level. That gives us 8 months to send videos out each month with updated video to D1 schools (and D3 schools who by the way want to try and talk to you before the D1 schools can speak to coaches). Some call me “chicken little” of college soccer because I am screaming on Ig or tik tok to get started asap. And if my aggressive nature makes you get started two days earlier then normal then it was worth it. If you are crazy like me and passionate like me and willing to be different then the crowd around you to achieve your goals call us so I can learn about you.
