The crew were safely evacuated, but the boat remained upside down — as multihulls typically cannot right themselves without assistance. By contrast, a monohull with an intact keel, even under severe heel, will generate a righting moment and return upright.

The docks buzzed, the cafes along the waterfront filled with crews and supporters, and the turquoise waters off English Harbour became the stage for one of offshore racing’s most anticipated showdowns; the RORC Caribbean 600. From seasoned offshore pros to ambitious amateur teams, the fleet brought together an impressive mix of talent, technology, and international spirit that reminded everyone why this race has become such a fixture on the global sailing calendar. For the 600 nautical mile race, spectators line the historic ramparts and hillsides to watch the fleet charge out past Fort Charlotte and into open water. The course, which weaves around a necklace of Caribbean islands, is as strategic as it is scenic, demanding sharp navigation, stamina, and smart decisions in ever-shifting trade winds. Among the standout performances in 2026 was the powerful trimaran Argo, which delivered a spectacular run to secure multihull line honours. Their pace around the islands was nothing short of electrifying, especially as they battled closely with fellow trimaran Zoulou, pushing each other hard across the course! On the monohull side, the sleek Black Jack 100 surged ahead to take line honours after a gripping duel with the ever-competitive Leopard 3. RORC Caribbean 600 — The 17th edition of Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Caribbean 600 set off on February 23 from Antigua, marking the start of the season for many and standing as one of offshore racing’s true benchmarks. Six hundred miles around eleven islands. Since its inaugural race in 2009, the first offshore event of its kind in the region, the Caribbean 600 has drawn an international fleet of elite monohulls, multihulls, and offshore thoroughbreds. Remon Vos’ RP100 Black Jack 100 (formerly Alfa Romeo II) took Monohull Line Honours under Tristan Le Brun. Coming from Fastnet and Middle Sea victories, she arrived in the Caribbean with expectations and left with results. As the fleet gets faster, the margins get tighter. Farr 100 Leopard 3, a constant presence since the race’s inception, acknowledged the shift. “When you’re racing boats like Black Jack, it makes a big difference,” said skipper Chris Sherlock. The level only rises. That intensity is no accident. Antigua remains the Caribbean’s sailing capital for a reason: steady trade winds, open Atlantic swell, shifting current, and a coastline that rewards precision. Long before it hosted race fleets, it hosted warships. Under Admiral Nelson, Antigua served as the Royal Navy’s Caribbean base. Nelson’s Dockyard still stands, now welcoming carbon rigs instead of warships. After more than three centuries of British rule, Antigua and Barbuda became an independent Commonwealth nation in 1967 and fully independent in 1981. The maritime culture never left.
