In 1933, Nina Simone was born. In 1965—on her 32nd birthday—her friend and neighbor, Malcolm X, was assassinated.
This wasn’t just a tragic coincidence; it was a profound catalyst. Nina’s dream was classical piano, but the escalating violence of the 60s—and especially Malcolm’s murder—forced her hand.
She stopped being the “safe” entertainer and weaponized her music. From “Mississippi Goddam” to performing at the Selma march, she threw her entire career into the fight. The industry blacklisted her, the FBI watched her every move, but she never broke.
They killed the man, but they activated a voice they couldn’t control.

In a 1968 televised interview, Nina Simone a prominent singer and revolutionary, spoke about what freedom meant for her, and she simply replied by saying that is No Fear, highlighting her that freedom is more than a political issue.
“I’ll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear! I mean really, no fear. If I could have that half of my life, no fear. Lots of children have no fear. That’s the closest way I can describe it.
That’s the only way I can describe it.”
