Updates have been released regarding both tankers illegally flying the Gambian flag.🇬🇲 • The 2002-built Banjul-registered (false) Suezmax Crude oil tanker MT KAIROS, which was hit by 🇺🇦 Ukrainian surface drones 28 nautical miles north of the Istanbul Strait, has been confirmed to be leaking a significant amount of fuel into the sea. Had the vessel been fully loaded, the incident could have triggered a major environmental disaster fortunately, MT KAIROS was en route to 🇷🇺 Russia’s Novorossiysk Port to load oil when the attack occurred. A Suezmax-class tanker typically carries up to 1.5 million barrels of crude oil, highlighting the scale of risk involved. Around the same time, the 2018-built LR2-class Banjul-registered (false) Crude oil tanker MT VIRAT, which was struck by Ukrainian surface drones 35 nautical miles off the Turkish coast, near the province of Kastamonu, is now being towed to Istanbul by the Turkish tugboat MED FIRAT 🇹🇷, operated by Med Marine. AIS data suggests that the ship had departed from Russia’s Taman Port en route to Dakar.
