This tiny new device can navigate using quantum physics rather than GPS! Normally, a pilot needs four satellites to figure out its location…but this device uses atoms that act like compass needles sensitive to earth’s magnetic field, which is different everywhere! So it can record the magnetic “fingerprint” anywhere, no satellites needed! For more optimistic science and tech stories, follow along! #science #magnet #GPS #quantum #technology

In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus quietly challenged the most comfortable idea humanity had ever held: that Earth was still, central, and unmoving. Centuries later, we now know the truth is far stranger. Earth is anything but quiet. It spins at over 1,600 km per hour, races around the Sun at 107,000 km per hour, and carries us through a galaxy already moving through an expanding universe. Beneath our feet, a molten core roars with heat, generating the magnetic field that shields life itself. Our seasons are born from a simple tilt, not distance. That slight lean gives us summers and winters, growth and decay. Our planet sits at a rare distance where liquid water can exist, where oceans remain stable, and where eclipses are possible at all because the Moon and Sun appear almost perfectly matched in the sky. A cosmic coincidence so precise it turns chance into wonder. That’s what Prof. Brian Cox reflects on in today’s video. He reminds us that Earth isn’t a silent rock floating in space, but a dynamic, violent, beautifully balanced world in constant motion, a fragile miracle we experience as stillness only because we move with it. 🌍✨ Speaker: @profbriancox #space #universe #astronomy #earth #cosmos AI voiced PROJECT FGA

A Pea-Sized Brain Just Outsmarted Quantum Scientists Brain smaller than a pea. Uses quantum physics our scientists can't replicate. This bird just flexed on humanity's entire physics department 🧠⚛️ While we're building billion-dollar quantum computers, nature solved it 200 MILLION years ago. With a brain the size of your fingernail. The secret? Quantum entanglement in their EYEBALLS. And nano-magnets in their beak. Two navigation systems humans still can't fully recreate in a lab. They see Earth's magnetic field. Like built-in infrared vision. But for magnetic lines. Tag someone who needs their mind blown. The monarch butterfly completes one of the longest and most mysterious migrations on Earth, and it happens almost entirely across the United States. Every year, millions of monarchs travel from Canada and the northern U.S. all the way to central Mexico, covering up to 3,000 miles — yet not a single butterfly completes the full round trip. Here’s the mind-blowing part: The monarchs that return north are great-grandchildren of the ones that left. No GPS. No leaders. No parents guiding them. Yet they somehow know exactly where to go, landing in the same trees their ancestors used generations before. Scientists still don’t fully understand how monarchs navigate using the sun, Earth’s magnetic field, and internal clocks. Monarch butterflies also depend heavily on milkweed, a plant found across the U.S. Without it, they cannot survive or reproduce. Because of habitat loss and pesticide use, monarch populations have declined sharply — making them a powerful symbol of American conservation efforts and citizen science, with millions of Americans planting milkweed to help save them. This tiny insect has become one of the most inspiring wildlife stories in the United States, proving that even the smallest creatures can travel farther than almost any animal on Earth.

An MRI machine can’t just be “switched off” like normal equipment because its main magnet is always on. 🧲 MRI machines use a superconducting magnet that carries electricity with almost zero resistance. To make that possible, it’s kept at extremely low temperatures using liquid helium. As long as it stays cold, the magnet continuously produces a powerful magnetic field — even if the scanner isn’t actively taking images. Turning it off isn’t simple. To shut down the magnet completely, a process called a “quench” has to happen, where the liquid helium is rapidly released and the magnet loses its superconducting state. This is expensive, rare, and usually only done in emergencies or for major maintenance. 👇 Fun Fact Here: The magnetic field in an MRI is so strong that even when it’s not scanning, metal objects can still be pulled toward it. 👉 Follow @learn.with.tunes for simple explanations that actually make sense. #howitworks #medicaltechnology #sciencefacts #stemlearning #learnwithtunes

MRI rooms look normal, but the machine inside creates an extremely powerful magnetic field. Even small metal objects can suddenly fly toward the scanner with dangerous force, putting patients and staff at serious risk. Officialviralplanet The magnet used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines is extraordinarily powerful—around 60,000 times stronger than Earth’s magnetic field. This immense strength allows the MRI to align hydrogen atoms inside the human body and produce incredibly detailed images of tissues and organs. Because of this power, even small metal objects can become dangerous projectiles near an MRI scanner, which is why strict safety rules are enforced in MRI rooms. What seems like a quiet medical device is actually one of the strongest and most precise magnets humans have ever built, harnessed carefully to save lives and diagnose disease. Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed magnetic microrobots capable of delivering drugs to precise locations inside the body. Their study, “Clinically Ready Magnetic Microrobots for Targeted Therapies,” describes a system where gelatin capsules embedded with magnetic nanoparticles are guided through blood vessels using external electromagnetic fields. Doctors can track the microrobots in real time via X-ray imaging. Once the capsule reaches its target, a high-frequency magnetic field heats the particles, dissolving the gelatin and releasing medication within forty seconds. The team successfully demonstrated navigation in pigs and sheep, marking the first time magnetic microrobots have operated within a clinically relevant environment. All materials used are already FDA-approved for other intravenous applications. DOI: 10.1126/science.adx1708 #science #tech #robot #medicine #research

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most advanced medical technologies, and at its core lies an incredibly powerful magnet. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use harmful radiation. Instead, it relies on a strong magnetic field—often thousands of times more powerful than the Earth’s natural magnetic field—to create detailed images of the inside of the human body. When a person enters an MRI machine, this powerful magnet aligns the hydrogen atoms present in the body. Radio waves are then sent through the body, temporarily disturbing this alignment. As the atoms return to their original position, they release signals that are captured by the machine and converted into highly detailed images of organs, tissues, and even tiny structures. This magnetic power allows doctors to detect injuries, tumors, brain disorders, and many other conditions with incredible precision. However, because of the strength of the magnet, even small metal objects can become dangerous, which is why strict safety rules are always followed during MRI scans. In simple terms, MRI is a perfect example of how invisible magnetic forces can be used to safely explore the human body in extraordinary detail. #explorepage #biology #biologia #medical #science
