Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels both spent significant periods in financial hardship, though in very different ways. Karl Marx lived much of his adult life in chronic poverty, especially during his exile in London. After being expelled from several European countries, he settled in Soho, where he struggled to support his family through journalism and occasional political writing. Income was unstable, debts accumulated, and several of his children died in conditions linked to illness and deprivation. His major work, *Capital*, was written not in comfort but in cramped apartments, often while he was ill and hounded by creditors. Poverty for Marx was not an abstract concept; it structured his daily existence.
Friedrich Engels, by contrast, came from a wealthy industrial family that owned textile factories in Germany and England. Personally, he did not experience long-term poverty in the way Marx did. However, he worked in his father’s factory in Manchester—a role he disliked

ISAs a Marxist, one of my largest critiques of postmodernism is the inherent pessimism and anti revolutiony fervor baked into it. It’s the ultimate form of idealism which will always shield us from the MATERIAL REALITY of our untied class struggle. Intersectionality is a NEEDED development in Marxist theory but to center fragmentation will always ignore the overarching capitalist system we’re ALL victims to.
