For decades, two companies have controlled the global card payment rails. Every time you tap your card, they take a small slice of the transaction. Multiply that by trillions of dollars and the profits explode.
In the U.S., Rep. Josh Hawley recently pressed executives from Visa and Mastercard on why their margins sit above 50%.
The answer is simple… network power.
Banks, merchants, and consumers are already locked into their payment rails. Once a system like that dominates the market, new competitors struggle to even get started.
But there is a solution.
Open banking.
Countries that implement open banking allow secure, real time payments directly between bank accounts. No card network required. No interchange fees siphoning money out of every transaction.
The technology exists today.
Canada has promised it for nine years.
Instead of competition, we’ve protected a closed system where fees keep rising and innovation stalls.
In a country struggling with productivity and competition…
