BAThis is incredibly vulnerable for me to share, but I thought I would share it anyways because I know so many medical students are nervous as match week approaches. Everyone shares their videos about matching into their number 1 program, but I rarely come across the videos of people with different reactions, and I think it’s important to remember that match day isn’t easy for everyone. Last year l matched into psychiatry at an amazing program, but it wasn’t my number 1 program. In that moment, I was completely heartbroken, and the life I had envisioned for myself shattered. My match day result meant l would be moving across the country soon to be thousands of miles away from most of my family and friends. I was devastated. What I didn’t realize then is that this program is exactly what I needed. Even the location has turned out to be a blessing, funny enough. I still get emotional watching this video back, because I feel bad for the girl who thought she wasn’t good enough for her number 1 program. She was more than good enough, and I’ll stand 10 toes down on that. My advice for everyone that’s nervous for match week is to just enjoy these last few moments of pure oblivion before your life completely changes. And if you don’t get the result you want on Friday, I urge you to take the time you need to grieve. But don’t let it take this accomplishment from you, because yes, matching in and of itself is a huge accomplishment, no matter where you go. And I promise that wherever you do end up, if you make the most of it, you will have no regrets.

Rejection is hard to talk about.
But in light of match day celebrations, I know there are many silently struggling with being unmatched.
I hope this brings you hope.
In college, I applied to an early med program — one that would’ve let me go to med school without the MCAT or physics. The VERY two things I truly didn’t believe I was capable of.
I never felt like I was strong enough for medicine. When I found this program, it felt like my ONE shot — a way in without having to face the doubts I carried so deeply.
I went through an intense application and, out of thousands of applicants, was selected for an interview. My hopes skyrocketed. I practiced endlessly, prepared OBSESSIVELY, and gave it everything I had.
And then I was rejected.
I was devastated.
What I couldn’t see then but understand now is that this rejection wasn’t a failure. It was a redirection.
That program would have taken me far from home and family, far from a life I didn’t yet realize I deeply wanted. I was willing to give up everything to become a doctor, but God knew my heart better than I did.
God was asking me to trust Him fully — to believe that He would walk with me through the fear and uncertainty, and that even closed doors are part of a plan meant “to prosper and not to harm, to give hope and a future” Jeremiah 29:11.
Two years later, I ended up exactly where I was meant to be — at the med school I attend now close to home.
I share this for three reasons:
1) to be transparent about failure on a platform that too often highlights only the best version of ourselves
2) to share a piece of my testimony
3) to honor the blessing of a mom who sat with me in the pain and reminded me of God’s truth when I couldn’t see it myself through the tears
maybe someone else needs the reminder today: failure can be a redirection — one step closer to understanding God’s plan 🤍

MIIn honor of Match Day tomorrow, I can’t help but reminisce on this moment from last year. Connor and I were so ready to find out where we’d be spending the next five years, and whether we’d get to do it together. In the middle of all the uncertainty, we kept coming back to the truth that God’s plan for our lives would always be better than anything we could plan for ourselves.
We’ll never forget the feeling of opening that envelope and finding out we both matched to our number one choice, together.
If you’re a future doctor waiting for tomorrow, know this: no matter what your envelope says, your next season is going to be full of growth, purpose, joy, and new beginnings. Whether it’s your first choice or your last, you are going to be a doctor and God has something beautiful waiting for you. Embrace your new destination, your future is SO bright. ♥️
