Every year I post about the Annual Medical Education Conference, a medical conference for Black and Brown students. And every year, the backlash comes. Because even now, the visibility of Black doctors still makes some people uncomfortable. That’s exactly why spaces like this still matter.

A doctor in leather shoes doing barbell lunges? “Bro… curls and bench press are enough.” No. They’re not. Here is a truth most people don’t know: Your legs are your metabolic engines. Not your biceps. Not your chest. Not your abs. Your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings — these are the largest muscles in the human body. When they grow stronger, your entire system changes: ➡️ Improved insulin sensitivity ➡️ Higher basal metabolic rate ➡️ Stronger posture & spine alignment ➡️ Reduced chronic back, hip & knee pain ➡️ Better balance, reflexes, athleticism Doctors spend their lives hunched over patients, microscopes, screens, and surgical tables. Necks collapse. Lower backs scream. Shoulders become stone. A strong doctor is not a vanity project. It is survival. When I was younger, people said: “Doctors shouldn’t be bodybuilders.” “Big muscles reduce dexterity.” “Surgeons should be lean, delicate, gentle.” Nonsense. You cannot treat patients if your own body is crumbling. Every surgeon knows the pain of long procedures — 8–12 hours standing, hands steady, spine locked, heart focused. That discipline is athletic. It demands stamina, leg drive, core stability, and mental resilience. Curls won’t save you there. Squats will. Strong legs → strong diaphragm mechanics → better breathing → more endurance → clearer thinking → steadier hands. Doctors aren’t robots. We are humans with bodies like everyone else — and medicine can destroy those bodies if we don’t protect them. So yes, I squatted in conference shoes. Because I refuse to make excuses. No perfect outfit. No perfect timing. No perfect gym bag. The bar doesn’t care about your outfit. Your quads don’t care about your schedule. Your health doesn’t care about opinions. Strong legs.
