Medication Safety Reminder Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) is a commonly prescribed antibiotic, but it carries serious FDA Black Box Warnings you should know about: Tendon damage: Risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture (especially Achilles). Nerve effects: Can cause lasting peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, burning). Brain effects: May trigger seizures, hallucinations, mood changes, or confusion. Aortic risks: Linked to increased risk of aortic aneurysm or rupture in some patients. 👉 Because of these risks, fluoroquinolones like Cipro are usually not first-line unless other safer antibiotics aren’t an option. ✅ Always talk to your provider about risks vs benefits before starting. ✅ Report any new tendon pain, weakness, or unusual nerve symptoms immediately. Medication safety is just as important as effectiveness. #ciprofloxacin #antibiotics #blackboxwarning #nurse #nursepractitioner #reels

It's not an illegal substance. It's not even a prescription painkiller. The answer? Fluoroquinolone antibiotics - drugs like Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox. These are commonly prescribed for UTIs, sinus infections, and bronchitis. And they come with a black box warning from the FDA for a reason. The potential side effects include: - Peripheral neuropathy (sometimes permanent) - Tendon rupture - Central nervous system damage - Muscle weakness and pain I've treated patients whose lives were turned upside down after a single course of these antibiotics. Some had symptoms years later. I'm not saying never take antibiotics - sometimes they're necessary. But you deserve to know the risks and explore alternatives when possible. Always ask your doctor: "Is this absolutely necessary, and are there safer options?" Comment "SKOOL" to join my exclusive community where I discuss medication safety and nerve protection. Heartbreaking news from Florida as we learn about the tragic passing of a toddler who suffered a massive heart attack after a medication error. The lawsuit alleges that a doctor missed a crucial decimal point, resulting in the child receiving ten times the necessary dose of potassium. 💔 This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the high stakes involved in medical care, particularly in pediatrics where small discrepancies can lead to devastating consequences. It's essential now more than ever for healthcare professionals to be vigilant with dosages and for parents to be informed about the medications their children are receiving. 🏥✨ Keeping our little ones safe is a responsibility that cannot be taken lightly. Our hearts go out to the family navigating this unimaginable loss. Let’s raise awareness about the importance of medication safety and advocate for better practices in medical care to prevent such tragedies in the future. 🕊️💖 #MedicationSafety #HealthcareAwareness #RIP #ChildHealth #FloridaTragedy #AdvocacyMatters #SafetyFirst #DonaldTrump

A medication that felt “fine” at 45 can become dangerous at 75. This week’s high-risk medication: sulfonylureas like glipizide, glyburide, and glimepiride. They raise the risk of low blood sugar, which in older adults can mean dizziness, confusion, falls, and even memory decline. If you’re over 65, it’s worth reviewing whether safer options exist. Comment CAUTION and I’ll send you a guide to help you talk with your doctor about the safest diabetes plan for you. ‌ #Aging #Meded #doctorsofinstagram #nursing #Medication safety

Kids and medications are a scary combination… and this case is a good reminder of how fast things can happen. 👀 🏃‍♂️Follow along @collinnaugher.np to make sure you don’t miss out on more ways to keep your kiddo safe! A healthy 4-year-old suddenly started acting “drunk.” Slurred words. Walking sideways. Not quite himself. No fever. No injury. Nothing obvious. The answer ended up being a single pill on the floor at a grandparent’s house. Many seizure medications can cause symptoms like: 🧠 Sleepiness or confusion 🚶 Poor balance or “drunk” walking 👀 Strange eye movements 💤 Extreme fatigue ❤️ Sometimes a slower heart rate For a small child, even one pill can cause significant symptoms. The tricky part is that medication ingestions can look like a lot of other things first. Parents often worry about: • head injury • infection • stroke • dehydration Sometimes it’s something much simpler… and much more dangerous. A few quick safety reminders that help prevent this kind of situation 👇 💊 Store medications high and locked when possible 💊 Never leave pills on counters or tables during refills 💊 Be extra careful at grandparent or relative homes where routines may differ 💊 Kids explore with their hands and mouths faster than we expect Most families never think about this risk until they hear a story like this. 🚨 Red Flags After Possible Medication Exposure Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) or seek care at the ER if a child has: ⚠️ Sudden sleepiness or confusion ⚠️ Trouble walking or severe dizziness ⚠️ Slurred speech ⚠️ Vomiting after a possible ingestion ⚠️ Seizures ⚠️ Very slow or very fast heart rate Poison Control is free, available 24/7, and incredibly helpful. Stories like this are why medication safety matters so much in homes with kids. If you know someone with toddlers who spend time at grandparents’ houses, this is a helpful reminder to pass along. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 And if real pediatric cases like this help you feel more prepared as a parent, there are plenty more worth learning from here. 🩺 #momlife #dadlife #drugoverdose #kids #parenting

#Medicationsafety Reel by @toyinsaraki (verified account) - Today on @WHO World Patient Safety Day, I call for global solidarity and concerted action under this year's theme Safe Care for Every Newborn and Ever

@toyinsaraki
Today on @WHO World Patient Safety Day, I call for global solidarity and concerted action under this year’s theme Safe Care for Every Newborn and Every Child, with the call to action, Patient Safety From the Start!, which rightly focuses our attention on the unique vulnerabilities of our youngest patients and our shared duty to keep them safe. I wholly endorse the World Health Organization #WorldPatientSafetyDay2025 Goals and Report, as a clear framework to eliminate avoidable harm by engaging children and families, enhancing medication safety, improving diagnostic safety, preventing healthcare-associated infections, and reducing risks for small and sick newborns. The goals organise priority actions across people, tasks, tools and technology, the workplace environment, organisation, and measures that track progress, including timely triage within fifteen minutes for danger signs, scaling kangaroo mother care, and routine tracking of hand hygiene and sepsis and device-related infection rates. A statistic is more than a number; it tells a human story. Data has guided my work since the inception of my @WellbeingAfrica Foundation, highlighted in 2009 when I launched the Personal Health Record, which later informed our collaboration and contributions to @UNICEF and JICA within the WHO Implementing Best Practice Hub. By placing vital knowledge in mothers’ hands and digitising the PHR for midwife-led use, Nigeria can lead in improving maternal and infant outcomes. At #WBFA, we champion respectful family-centred care, advance midwifery and nursing excellence, strengthen medication and diagnostic safety, reinforce #WASH for infection prevention, and improve outcomes for small and sick newborns through #KMC, safe newborn triage, and continuous data-driven skills development. I urge governments, health leaders, professional bodies, civil society and communities to adopt the WHO Goals, invest in the workforce, measure what matters, and share learning so that safe care for every newborn and every child becomes a universal reality. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #PatientSafetyFromTheStart #NewbornHealth #ChildHealth #WellbeingForAll #WASHWednesday
