Bone loss starts earlier than most women realize. By the time you hear the word “osteoporosis,” the process has often been happening quietly for years. In this episode of the MenopauseWize Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Jocelyn Wittstein to unpack one of the most important (and misunderstood) questions in menopause care: Is prevention better than treatment when it comes to bone health? Dr. Wittstein is an orthopaedic surgeon specialized in sports medicine. She is currently an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine where she fulfils the roles of a clinician, a researcher and an educator of medical students, residents, and fellows. Her research interests are the female athlete across the lifespan, post traumatic arthritis after knee injuries, frozen shoulder, and the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause among others. Dr. Wittstein is the president of The Forum: Women in Sports Medicine, a core leadership member of the Duke Female Athlete Program, a member of the Milken Institute Women’s Health Initiative, and the author of The Complete Bone and Joint health plan - which I recently enjoyed reading and would highly recommend for women looking to create a complete bone and joint health plan. We discuss: • What actually happens to your bones during menopause • Osteopenia vs osteoporosis — what those numbers really mean • What hormone therapy does (and doesn’t do) for bone • Bisphosphonates and other osteoporosis drugs — benefits and risks And perhaps most importantly — how to think long-term about bone strength instead of reacting late. Because bone health isn’t just about fractures. It’s about mobility, independence, and quality of life.
