Did something urgent come in after I left?” 👉 It shifts the metric from Time (“5 PM”) to Results (“task list”). By asking if something “urgent” came in, you force them to identify a specific business problem. If they can’t, they reveal themselves as micromanagers focused on optics rather than productivity. 2️⃣ “Everything’s great. Just to clarify—is there an expectation to work past 5pm? I want to make sure I understand what the standard hours are.” 👉 You’re forcing them to either admit there’s no expectation (in which case, why are they asking?) or reveal that they expect unpaid overtime. 3️⃣ “I’m good, thanks for checking. I log off around 5 to recharge unless there’s something urgent. If there’s ever a real emergency, please text my cell directly.” 👉 You’re setting a boundary while showing flexibility for true emergencies. If they expect you to stay late every day “just because,” that’s not reasonable. This can also help reduce your anxiety because you know you don’t have to monitor email; if the building is not burning, they won’t text you and your night is safe. — If your manager is tracking when you log off and questioning you for leaving on time, that’s a massive 🚩 about the culture. You’re not being paid for 24/7 availability unless that’s explicitly in your contract. (It’s not…) Logging off at 5pm isn’t “leaving early”—it’s doing your job. If your manager has a problem with that, the problem is the culture, not you. — 👉 Comment SCRIPTS and I’ll send you 25 work-approved boundary-setting scripts for all kinds of corporate BS.
