Eleanor of Castile and Edward I shared one of the most enduring royal marriages of the Middle Ages. Eleanor was born around 1241, the daughter of King Ferdinand III of Castile. In 1254, she married Prince Edward of England, the future King Edward I. Both were teenagers at the time — Eleanor about 13, and Edward about 15. Their marriage lasted more than three decades, which was unusual for medieval royal couples often separated by politics or war. Eleanor frequently traveled with Edward, accompanying him across England and continental Europe. She even joined him on the Ninth Crusade in the early 1270s, where Edward was wounded during an assassination attempt. Though later legends exaggerated Eleanor’s role in saving him, historical sources agree she remained closely by his side. Eleanor and Edward had at least sixteen children, though many died young — a common tragedy in the medieval world. In 1290, Eleanor fell ill while traveling with the king and died at Harby in Nottinghamshire. Edward’s grief became one of the most famous acts of royal devotion in English history. As Eleanor’s funeral procession carried her body to London, Edward ordered twelve monumental stone crosses to be built at each place where her coffin rested overnight. These monuments, known as the Eleanor Crosses, stood as a tribute to the queen he had loved for more than 35 years. Some of the crosses still survive today — reminders of a royal marriage remembered for its unusual devotion. #EleanorOfCastile #EdwardI #WomenInHistory

Our Lady of Saidnaya Monestary in Sednaya, Syria was founded by emperor Justinian in 547 AD. In it, you will find a depiction of him, his wife Theodora, and the Virgin Mary, as he was said to have a vision of her and being ordered to build the church there in her name. It was inscribed in Arabic, reflecting the local language, as well as the multi ethnic identities of Orthodoxy as a whole. It has since become a pilgrimage site for many Orthodox Christians from the Middle Ages, until today.

For centuries, one object has obsessed believers and scientists alike the Shroud of Turin. This ancient linen bears the faint image of a crucified man. Many believe it shows the true face of Jesus Christ. When photographed in 1898, the image shocked the world: it appeared as a photographic negative, revealing a hauntingly realistic face something no medieval artist should have been able to create. But in 1988, carbon dating told a different story, placing the cloth in the Middle Ages, not biblical times. Still, no one has ever explained how the image was made. No paint. No brushstrokes. And details so precise they form a 3D image. Forgery… lost technology… or something else entirely? The Shroud may not prove who Jesus was but it remains one of history’s greatest mysteries. #history #jesus #christmas #ancienthistory #bible

🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸 THE BLACK PEARL OF BOSRA. The Roman Theater of Bosra, an ancient Nabatean city in southern Syria, was built in the 2nd century AD, likely under Emperor Trajan, after the annexation of the Nabatean kingdom in 106 AD. The theater is built of local black basalt, a stone that gives it a unique appearance compared to all other classical theaters made of white marble. The structure is exceptionally well preserved as it was incorporated into a Muslim fortress in the Middle Ages, which protected it for centuries. It is one of the largest (it held 15,000 people) and best-preserved Roman theaters in the world. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #siria #syria #damasco #architettura #archeologia

You may think this is AI… but it’s NOT! Would you believe this was built in the Middle Ages?! Built between 1015 and 1439, Strasbourg Notre Dame Cathedral is the tallest structure built from the Middle Ages that is still standing! It is beautiful… 🤩 My only regret is not adjusting the shutter speed on my HDR camera to remove the flickers. 📍Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg Follow @escapetoanywhere for more travel tips, ideas, inspiration, and humor 😊 © Copyrighted Content. After the Middle Ages, Quedlinburg lost its power. Trade routes shifted. Industry never arrived. No wealth, no expansion, no rebuilding. In the 19th and 20th centuries, when other German cities modernized, Quedlinburg simply couldn’t afford to. So the timber houses stayed. The street layout stayed. Even the scale of the city stayed medieval. After World War II, there was still no money. And during the GDR period, large-scale reconstruction never happened. What looks like preservation today was once economic stagnation. And that’s why Quedlinburg survived intact while richer cities were “improved.” 🫶 Follow @theatlasaura for perspective, not postcards.

👉 For places that should definitely be on your itinerary follow @acrosseveryborder ✈️ We thought this was just another old bridge… and then we realised people actually live on it 😳 Right in the heart of Lincoln, this medieval bridge has shops, homes & centuries of daily life stacked right on top of flowing water! 🏰 Walk across it and you’re literally stepping through the Middle Ages 🏠 Look closer and you’ll spot doors, windows & lived-in spaces built into the bridge ⏳ It’s the oldest medieval bridge in the UK where people still live today (casual flex, Lincoln) It’s one of those places that doesn’t scream for attention… but once you notice it, you can’t unsee how wild the history actually is! Another reminder that the UK hides some seriously underrated gems when you slow down and go off the beaten path!! 📍 High Bridge, Lincoln

The Battle of Nicopolis (1396) was one of the most significant battles between the Ottoman Empire and European forces in the late Middle Ages. It took place near the Danube River in present-day Bulgaria, where the Ottoman army under Sultan Bayezid I (Bayezid the Thunderbolt) faced a large Crusader army composed of Hungarian, French, Burgundian, German, and other European knights. The Crusaders aimed to stop Ottoman expansion in the Balkans and to recapture lost territories. Despite the Crusaders’ numerical strength and heavy cavalry, their lack of coordination and overconfidence played a decisive role in their defeat. The Ottoman army used a well-organized battle plan, with light troops wearing down the enemy and disciplined forces delivering the final blow. The arrival of Serbian troops allied with the Ottomans further strengthened Bayezid’s position. The battle ended in a decisive Ottoman victory, which secured Ottoman dominance in the Balkans and marked the failure of the last major medieval crusade against the Ottomans. #ottomanempire #ottomanempire #battle #war #türk #osmanlı

Cheesecake is a dessert made from a mixture of cheese, eggs, and sweeteners, typically set on a base or crust. 🍰 Its origins trace back to ancient Greece, where early versions were prepared from fresh cheese, honey, and wheat and served as a source of nourishment rather than a sweet treat. 🏺 The recipe was later adopted by the Romans, who introduced baking and eggs, allowing the cake to develop a firmer structure. 🏛️ Throughout the Middle Ages, cheesecake evolved regionally across Europe, using locally available cheeses such as ricotta and quark. 🌍 A major turning point occurred in the 19th century in the United States with the accidental development of cream cheese, which became the foundation of the smooth, rich cheesecake widely known today. 🇺🇸✨ #History #foodhistory #cheesecake #didyouknow
