At its heart, the film shows that health doesn’t come from chasing more, but from living in rhythm with what is. 🌿 Core Japanese wellness principles from the film: 1. Ritual creates regulation Hirayama’s days are repetitive waking up, cleaning, watering plants, listening to cassette tapes. To Western society it might feel monotonous but in Japan it’s ikigai: a life anchored by meaningful, steady rituals. These routines calm the nervous system, lower cortisol, and give the body a sense of safety, the foundation of all healing. 2. Presence heals the body. Hirayama rarely speaks, yet he is deeply alive noticing sunlight through leaves, the sound of music. It all encompasses mindfulness, a cornerstone of Japanese wellness. When we live in the present, the brain exits fight-or-flight and the body enters repair mode. 3. Simplicity reduces inflammation. Japanese culture values wabi-sabi, the beauty of what is simple, imperfect, and real. Less stimulation is less stress and more balance in the nervous and hormonal systems. 4.
