They Don’t “Make” Your Career — You Do Agencies love to project power, but models who actively network, market themselves, and build online presence often surpass those who just “wait to be booked.” You’re your own manager now — the agency just facilitates. 📸 3. “Exclusive” Isn’t Always a Win That shiny exclusive contract? It can trap you. Many fresh faces get locked in with one agency that doesn’t push them and they can’t sign anywhere else for years. 💅 4. Polaroids > Expensive Test Shoots They might push you to do pricey “agency photographer” shoots, but in reality, simple, clean digitals are what clients want. Polaroids can land you a campaign faster than an over-edited portfolio. 🕴️ 5. Not Every Casting Call Is Legit Agencies sometimes send new models to unpaid or “exposure” shoots just to build relationships with brands or photographers — not to benefit you. Always know what you’re getting out of it. 💬 6. Silence Doesn’t Mean Rejection If you’re not being booked, it’s not always your look sometimes the agency just isn’t pitching you. I researched reputable agencies that fit my look and sent my digitals through their submission pages. Don’t rely on one agency — submit to several. Tip: follow each agency’s submission guidelines exactly. 3. Built my portfolio with test shoots. I collaborated with photographers to start building my book. The goal is clean, diverse images so agencies and clients can see your range. Tip: I connected with creatives through Instagram and Threads. 4. Used social media strategically. A strong portfolio should include a mix of images like beauty shots, full body photos, editorial looks, and commercial/lifestyle images to show your range. Quality always matters more than quantity. Agencies look for potential not random photos. 3. Ignoring your Instagram. Even before you’re signed, your Instagram is your digital portfolio. Keep it clean, simple, and professional. 4. Wanting to sign with just any agency. Don’t rush just to say you’re signed. The wrong agency can slow you down instead of growing you. 5. Not understanding contracts. Tip: Look at the polas of signed models on agency websites and get inspired by their poses and outfits. Keep it simple and clean. 📸 2️⃣ Build your portfolio. In the beginning, I did test shoots and collaborations to grow my book and I still do! I started with beauty because it was easier, then expanded to other types of shoots. Tip: Connect with photography or makeup students. They often need models for their exams or portfolios. 💓 3️⃣ Use social media. Keep your profile public and share your work. Instagram can help you get opportunities. Tip: Follow models in the same market (and city if possible) and see who they work with. Look at who they shoot with and how they built their career. Get inspired, don’t copy.📱 4️⃣ Know your options. Modeling isn’t for everyone, that’s the reality. But there are many different types of modeling. Tip: If you’re not the right height for fashion, you can explore commercial modeling, parts modeling (hands, legs), or silhouette work. ✨ 5️⃣ Rejection is normal.
