BHI spent over a decade working as a model, and I would often get young girls asking me how to infiltrate the industry. They’d look at me with dreamy eyes at the glamorous photos… but here’s what we never spoke about:
✨ The waiting: Long hours between shoots and shows. Early call times for fit-ins and rehearsals. Low traffic, tight lighting, waiting for the camera crew, waiting for the makeup artist. Often hours would overrun. I used to carry my medical school books to shoots, sneaking a glance between hair, makeup, and shots. I don’t know how much actually went in, but it felt like proof of commitment.
✨ The skin: Heavy makeup, sometimes unsanitary tools, left my skin dehydrated, broken, and constantly erupting.
✨ The hair: All the heat tools, sprays, tight buns, extensions, jewelry, and scarves did a number on my scalp and hair health — and definitely sped up hair loss.
✨ The pay: No matter your experience, you’ll often have to fight for fair pay. Even as the face of a campaign, underpayment is common — apparently this happens if you’re a highly qualified doctor too, so… some things don’t change.
✨ The food & body image: Pizza and chips (if anything) on set, while expected to stay a size 6 or below. Unhealthy relationships with body image and food become almost inevitable. The pressure to be “skinnier before” often weighs heavier than your actual weight.
✨ The FOMO & comparison: You’ll love the photos, but the thrill is fleeting. The next job is always around the corner. Social media shows of other models and shows you didn’t get cast in can trigger moments of “less than” that never fully go away.
Modeling is glamorous, yes. But it’s also grit, endurance, and sacrifice — much of which the world never sees. 💫
