Unfortunately, Delhi's AQI often reaches the Very Poor or Severe category, especially between October and January, when weather conditions trap pollutants close to the ground.
Several factors contribute to the high AQI levels in Delhi. One of the main causes is vehicular emissions from millions of cars, buses, and trucks on the roads. Industrial pollution, construction dust, and burning of crop stubble in nearby states like Punjab and Haryana also significantly increase pollution levels. During winter, low wind speed and temperature inversion prevent pollutants from dispersing, leading to thick smog covering the city.
High AQI levels have serious health impacts on Delhi's population. People often experience breathing difficulties, eye irritation, coughing, throat irritation, and reduced lung function. Long-term exposure to polluted air can increase the risk of chronic respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and premature death. Children, elderly people, and individuals with existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable to these effects.
To control air pollution, the government has introduced several measures such as the odd-even vehicle rule, restrictions on construction activities during severe pollution, promotion of electric vehicles, and the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Authorities also monitor air quality using multiple monitoring stations across the city to provide real-time AQI updates to the public.
