Can you pass the Couch Stretch Test? Here’s a question we get asked all the time: “if someone was only going to do ONE mobilization, which one should it be?”⁠ ⁠ Might as well ask which of our two daughters we prefer most.⁠ ⁠ But, let’s play the game.⁠ ⁠ Because we recognize the importance hip extension plays in so many human movements and activities (see also getting up and down off the floor, carrying things, swinging/throwing objects...all without pain) we’re going to go with this one right here: COUCH.⁠ ⁠ Couch Test is so named because it’s based on a classic TRS (MWOD for the OGs) mobilization that sees the knee tucked into the seat of a couch with the shin resting on the couch back. It is THE perfect mobilization to work into that nightly downtime in the living room.⁠ ⁠ The Couch Test measures both your ability to extend your hips behind you AND the range of motion in your quadriceps. Normalize these two movements and presto: your legs can do everything they need to do.⁠ ⁠ So, the question stands: Can you pass the Couch Test? Doing so means you can hit “Position 3”, or that final position that @julietstarrett demonstrates in the video, which is bringing the torso upright as close to parallel to the while as possible, squeezing the butt firmly, and inhaling to a slow count of 5 before relaxing and exhaling for 5.⁠ ⁠ If you can’t hit Position 3, give the recommended mobilizations a try.
