Claude Mythos Preview was never trained to break into systems. It learned on its own.
And what it can do now has the entire security industry in a quiet panic.
Here’s what the internal report actually says.
Mythos found a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD — one of the most security-hardened operating systems ever built. It cracked FreeBSD’s server and got full root access as an unauthenticated user from anywhere on the internet. It broke into every major web browser. And it did all of this overnight, without a single human involved after the first prompt.
This isn’t a chatbot writing malware. This is an AI reading code the way a senior exploit engineer would — spotting bugs humans and fuzzers have missed for decades. 👁️
The previous Claude model had nearly a 0% success rate at autonomous exploit development.
Mythos succeeded 181 times on the same test.
Anthropic is not releasing this model to the public. Instead they launched Project Glasswing — a quiet effort to use Mythos to patch the world’s most critical software before attackers get something similar.
Because here’s the part that should keep you up at night. ⚠️
These capabilities weren’t built in. They emerged. As a side effect of the model getting better at coding and reasoning, it accidentally became the most dangerous hacking tool ever created.
And Anthropic openly admits: they see no reason to think this is where it plateaus.

MEAnthropic has finally confirmed the existence of Claude Mythos, but they will not release the model publicly, because it isa “cybersecurity reckoning.”��Instead, they have organized a 40-company coalition called “Project Glassing” to allow cybersecurity professionals a head start in locking down critical software.
This is an urgent initiative and it’s time to pay attention to alignment, because these models are getting seriously capable.
Mythos’ benchmarks are absurd:
It scored 77.8% on SWE_bench Pro, versus 53.4% for Opus 4.6.
59% on SWE-bench multimodal, versus 27.1% for Opus 4.6
That should give you an idea.
It is a tremendous leap.
Imagine what you will be able to build with Mythos when it eventually drops.
Also imagine, the damage you could do with it If they were to prematurely release it…

PRAnthropic’s new AI model “Mythos” — the key thing everyone is missing:
Every software has small bugs. That’s normal. GPT, Gemini, even older Claude models can find these bugs individually.
But Mythos does something no other model has done at this level — VULNERABILITY CHAINING.
It finds Bug A, Bug B, Bug C, Bug D — each one minor on its own. Then it connects them into one complete attack path. Automatically. No human guidance.
Real examples from testing:
→ Found 4 separate browser vulnerabilities and chained them into one exploit that escaped both the browser sandbox AND the OS sandbox
→ Found multiple Linux kernel flaws and chained them to achieve complete machine takeover
→ Found a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD that would let an attacker remotely crash any machine just by connecting to it
Previous model Opus 4.6: near 0% success at writing working exploits
Mythos: 83.1% success on first attempt
This ability was NOT trained. It emerged from being extremely good at coding and reasoning.
Anthropic is not releasing it publicly. 40+ companies including Apple, Microsoft, Google are using it defensively under Project Glasswing. $100M in credits committed.
Competitors are 6-18 months away from similar capabilities.
