In this 1936 animal flick from Ken G. Hall, bush babies took the spotlight as much as the humans. ‘Orphan of the Wilderness’ is one of the first features to use Australian wildlife as its prime attraction. Following Chut the orphaned joey, who loses his mother to hunters, the film tracks his hard-knock life from the wilderness to the boxing ring. This clip reflects the film’s surreal look, where on-location shots in the lush Burragorang Valley blend with a Cinesound soundstage in Bondi. A large bushland set was created – which perhaps explain why the animals are such naturals in front of the camera. Practical effects and clever editing create a clear narrative where the innocent Chut stumbles into the path of an emu and a koala, and viewers get a crystal-clear look at the tense encounter. Chut became the most famous kangaroo in Australia until he was dethroned by TV icon Skippy in the 1960s. Many of the film’s animal sequences are difficult to watch now – and there was opposition to the boxing scenes at the time. Hall's film was banned in England for alleged cruelty to animals but was endorsed by the RSPCA in Australia. In this clip from ‘The Ecidhna (or Spiny Anteater)’, a 1969 documentary made by the CSIRO, the ‘straw-coloured’ animal is observed trundling through the bush, burrowing in leaf litter, and splitting wood to get at snacks. Animal documentaries of the era often leaned into playful narration – wombat in the snow, a platypus riding a current – but CSIRO, working here with its Department of Wildlife Research, takes a measured, scientific approach even when presenting striking facts (the echidna can hear with its nose!).
