🇬🇧 Hello! 🙂 NASA'S ANIMATION OF PSR J2322 2650 B. On 16 December 2025, along with news about the unique atmosphere of this exoplanet very close to a pulsar, NASA presented this video on the orbit of PSR J2322-2650 b. This gas giant orbits very close to its star (just 1.5 million kilometres from the pulsar), and is therefore deformed by the star's gravity. The planet is also tidally locked, always showing the same face to the star. The pulsar rotates almost 300 times per second, while the planet orbits once every 7.8 hours. A team of scientists, using the James Webb Space Telescope's NirSpec instrument, has discovered that the planet's atmospheric composition defies logic, detecting molecular carbon, specifically C3 and C2, which should exist in the almost total absence of oxygen or nitrogen. James Webb produced the first-ever 3D map of Uranus! Scientists have achieved a historic milestone by creating the first three-dimensional map of Uranus using the James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRSpec instrument. By tracking the planet for nearly 15 hours, researchers captured the faint infrared glow of charged molecules in the upper atmosphere, rather than just the visible cloud tops. This mapping revealed that Uranus's ionosphere extends over 3,100 miles into space, with temperature peaks occurring at heights where the atmosphere is most influenced by the planet's unique magnetic environment. This vertical data provides the clearest evidence yet of how energy circulates through the mysterious ice giant, offering a much-needed look at its internal atmospheric structure. The mission also detected brilliant auroral bands sweeping across the planet’s poles, a direct result of Uranus’s unusual magnetic field which is both tilted and offset from its rotation axis.
