_L1. The first year, I was doing 3-5 test shoots a month (while being a full time student and working in corporate America). You need to be reaching out to photographers weekly. I reached out to hundreds until I got responses. I’ve never paid for a test shoots, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You DO NOT need to pay for test shoots. If an agency tells you do shoot specific kinds of photos with a specific style, you can pay, but there are many photographers that want to collaborate with you if they feel they will equally benefit from the collaboration.
2. Post on Instagram! All new models hate to hear this one. I’m sorry to tell you that if you don’t post, you’re making everything harder for yourself. Dare I say it’s basically impossible to be a full time model without posting. When I began doing test shoots, I posted weekly (3 times a week).
3. I got scouted by my mother agent 5 months after my first test shoot (because I was posting all the damn time 😂) After he signed me, he redeveloped my entire book and taught me how to shoot with intention and elevate styling to get optioned for jobs. I got better at posing and began doing even more test shoots. That next year, I booked 8 modeling campaigns.
4. I got on Casting Network and other casting platforms and started spending 2 hours EVERY DAY submitting my book to jobs. This is the part that everyone misses. You cannot just check these apps once or twice a week. Even if you’re not getting the jobs you’re submitting for, you’re putting yourself out there to potential clients and casting directors. This is when I started booking every single month, and multiple times a month. The second year of my career, I booked 38 modeling jobs.
5. Most importantly, 90% of this industry is mindset and energy. If you go into it with fear or doubt, that is exactly what you will get. I know models who complain about every single thing and get bogged down by the rejection despite the successes they’ve experienced. And it’s disappointing because that is the very thing holding them back. There is space for you in this industry if you believe that you’re capable of it. #losangelesmodel #nycmodel #fulltimemodel
