SH🛰️ India’s NavIC navigation satellite system faces a setback.
One of the key satellites IRNSS-1F, launched in March 2016, stopped providing navigation services after its last operational atomic clock failed. The malfunction happened just after the satellite completed its 10-year design life.
NavIC — India’s indigenous alternative to GPS — requires at least 4 operational satellites to deliver accurate positioning services, but the failure leaves only about 3 satellites fully functional, potentially affecting navigation coverage.

SANavIC भारत का सैटेलाइट नैविगेशन सिस्टम है। यह GPS की तरह काम करता है। GPS पूरी दुनिया में इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।
NavIC भारत के पूरे क्षेत्र और इसकी सीमाों से 1500 किमी तक को कवर करता है। भारत के 8 उपग्रह NavIC के लिेए काम कर रहे हैं और धरती पर 14 स्टेशन लगाए गए हैं।
GPS की तरह, तीन और नेविगेशन सिस्टम हैं जिनमें वैश्विक कवरेज है – यूरोपीय संघ से गैलीलियो, रूस की ग्लोनास और चीन की बीडौ।
जापान द्वारा संचालित QZSS, जापान में सेवा देने के साथ-साथ यह एशिया-ओशिनिया क्षेत्र को कवर करने वाला एक अन्य क्षेत्रीय नेविगेशन सिस्टम है।
विदेशी सैटेलाइट सिस्टम पर निर्भरता को दूर करने के लिए ISRO ने NavIC शुरू किया है।
धरती, वायु और समुद्र में नेविगेशन, मोबाइल फोन पर स्थिति की सूचना देने, सटीक समय बताने, मानचित्र बनाने और भूमि संरक्षण के लिए आंकड़े जुटाने में NavIC का इस्तेमाल किया जाएगा। आपदा प्रबंधन, हाइकर्स और पर्यटकों को धरती से सम्बंधित नेविगेशन करने, वाहनों और पानी के जहाज़ों का पता लगाने में भी 'नाविक' का इस्तेमाल किया जाएगा।

VINavIC Setback: Atomic Clock Failure Hits India’s GPS
India’s indigenous navigation system NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) has suffered another setback after the atomic clock onboard satellite IRNSS-1F stopped functioning on March 13. Atomic clocks are critical for navigation satellites because they enable extremely precise time measurement needed to calculate location and positioning data.
NavIC, officially known as the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), was designed as India’s own alternative to global systems like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and China’s BeiDou, providing navigation coverage across India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders. However, several first-generation satellites have faced atomic clock failures, reducing the constellation’s capability.
To address these issues, India has begun deploying second-generation NVS satellites. While NVS-01 is operational, NVS-02 failed to reach its final orbit due to an onboard engine problem. Restoring the NavIC constellation is crucial for India’s strategic autonomy in navigation, defence operations, aviation, shipping and smartphone positioning services.
