THSir Richard Branson has announced the heartbreaking passing of his beloved wife, Joan Templeman, at the age of 80.
In an emotional social media post on Tuesday, the Virgin founder shared:
“Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away.”
The couple’s extraordinary love story began in 1976, blossomed into a 1989 wedding on Necker Island, and weathered every adventure—from space flights to world-record attempts—side by side. Joan was Richard’s anchor, the quiet strength behind one of the world’s most daring entrepreneurs, and the heart of their family.

SHWow!! 🤩 Welcome to our late #WilderWednesday with the one and only Richard Branson on Necker Island 🏝️ I had the pleasure of attending Strive this week and honestly it’s the most unbelievable experience of my entire life! It felt like being back at camp, except in the most exquisite place in the world! I asked Richard if he would so generously be a guest on Wilder Wednesday and this is actually some incredible advise about life and business… basically have fun and let people enjoy themselves! I personally had the most fun and really created life long friendships with people from around the globe 🌎 Striving was about pushing myself to new limits physically with the challenges & deeply connecting with new friends in such a special way! Necker Island is pure magic and getting to experience it with 35 new friends was a once in a lifetime experience! Thank you, thank you, thank you @lisa_odenweller for your generous spirit in inviting me. Many more posts to come but I love this wisdom from Richard and getting to play tennis 🎾 with him all week was also a pinch me moment! Dreams do come true! ❤️❤️

Sir Richard Branson has officially responded to the fallout from the latest Epstein file dump, which revealed a 2013 email where the Virgin boss told Epstein to 'bring your harem' to Necker Island. In a statement released on February 4, Branson clarified that any contact with the financier was 'limited to group or business settings' and took place over a decade ago. The billionaire’s defense rests on a 2015 incident where Epstein offered a significant donation to Branson's charity, Virgin Unite. According to the statement, Branson’s team performed 'due diligence' which uncovered the 'serious' nature of Epstein's past, leading them to reject the funds and terminate all contact.
The 'harem' comment, which Branson's team says was simply repeating a term Epstein used to describe three adult women on his team, has been the focal point of social media outrage. However, the documents also reveal a more complex relationship, showing Branson offering PR advice to Epstein on how to 'rehabilitate' his image by having Bill Gates vouch for him. While Branson now maintains that Epstein’s actions were 'abhorrent,' critics are pointing to the friendly tone of the 2013 messages—where Branson wrote 'it was really nice seeing you yesterday'—as evidence that the 'due diligence' may have come years after the billionaire was already aware of Epstein's 2008 conviction.

"might buy it someday." The owner named a price: $6 million. Branson loved the island but didn't have that kind of money, so he joked he could only pay $180,000.
Months later the owner urgently needed cash and called Branson back. Branson returned and bought the entire island for $180,000 — a 33x discount.
He later turned Necker into a world-famous private resort worth tens of millions. What started as a joke became one of the greatest real-estate steals ever.
