She had just lost her mother, didn’t understand the language around her, and couldn’t understand why she was there. The image was taken by Wilhelm Brasse, a prisoner forced to document arrivals and deaths. He later said he never forgot her face. She became one of the hundreds of thousands of children murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau — a number too large to comprehend, but a life that once existed all the same. Decades later, artists and historians preserved her photo so she would be remembered not as a statistic, but as a child whose life was stolen. On the morning of September 11, 2001, FDNY firefighter David Weiss of Rescue Co. 1 was inside the North Tower (wtc 1) when his squad received a mayday order to evacuate. The danger was too great, and the towers were becoming unstable. At the time, he was on the 30th floor, but knowing there were injured people trapped above, he refused to leave. David and his brothers in Rescue Co. 1 did not turn back. They refused to leave, knowing there were still men and women trapped higher up, desperate for help. With full knowledge of the risks, they pressed on toward the 50th floor to try and save as many lives as possible. On that day, Rescue Co. 1 made it to the 83 floor of the North Tower (the highest floor reached by FDNY firemen on 9/11) before a localised collapse trapped them. Captain Terry Hatton of R-1, was heard over the radio saying "Rescue 1 trapped! Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!" at some point firefighter David Weiss managed to make his way back down the lobby covered in blood and urged firemen to go back and help. „This is after the collapse of the South Tower, as firefighters attempted to leave the North Tower.." Some firefighters were told by superiors to get out no matter what, some went up to help the trapped members, those that went up never came back down. Rescue Co. 1 tragically lost 11 members of its 11-member crew in the North Tower of the World Trade Center, according to reports. The firefighters were trapped in the collapse while carrying oxygen tanks and rescue equipment. #neverforget
