Video games did look better when we were kids. A while ago I plugged in my old Nintendo 64, but as I selected the my old saved file, which was more than 15 years old at that time, I was struck by how different the game looked on the screen. For a long time I thought that my young kid brain saw those images and thought that they looked amazing and watching them when I was older, was just me cathing up to the reality. Turns out they did look better, but it isn't for the reason you might think. It's because old CRT TVs worked by illuminating each pixel like a tiny light bulb, with the colors bleeding into each other, so the artists were painting on a different canvas than what we have today. This gives a roundess and a texture to most of the images that were played on those screens compared to the pixelated images that we see on modern LCD TVs. And every game benefited from it because the old analog technology distorted everything in a way that looked pretty. 

So you did remember correctly, those old games did look better when you were younger, we just didn’t know that the technology was creating a different picture than what we see today. Credits: @tvdetubo240p and Noodle on Youtube
