In this photograph taken in 1909 at the family’s beloved residence in Livadia, Crimea, we see the four daughters of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna:
- Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna (1895–1918)
- Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna (1897–1918)
- Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (1899–1918)
- Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna (1901–1918)
Known collectively as the Romanov sisters, they were great-granddaughters of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom through their mother, Empress Alexandra. The young grand duchesses were admired for their grace, charm, and strong sisterly bond, often referred to as “OTMA” after the first letter of each of their names.
Despite the idyllic setting and their privileged upbringing, the sisters’ lives came to a tragic end. Following the Russian Revolution, they were executed with their parents and brother, Tsarevich Alexei, in 1918, in one of the darkest episodes of the collapse of the Russian Imperial dynasty.
