If you’re an OT student scrolling this page because you’re terrified about student loans… You’re not alone 🫶🏾 I graduated OT school with $270,000 in student loans and honestly had no clue how repayment worked. I remember thinking “Yeah I’ll probably just die with these” ☠️ And when I did try to create a repayment plan, I felt instantly overwhelmed Income-driven plans, PSLF, refinancing, tax bombs - none of this was explained in school My original plan was to pay the minimum for 20 years and live my life because “everyone has student loans” But once I fell down the personal finance rabbit hole…everything changed And now I share everything I wish someone told me before graduation. The #1 thing to remember: Student loans feel complicated…but they’re not impossible to navigate. And the more you understand your options, the less scary they become. Here it is ⬇️ The one shift that finally made me confident in my acute care OT documentation: Structure and intention. ✍🏼 You’re managing lines, drains, oxygen. Transferring heavy patients. Facilitating ADLs. Determining safe discharge. 🏥 You are practicing at a high level. Your documentation should reflect that. If you’re the last one leaving the office because documentation feels heavy… If you’ve asked a coworker, “How would you document this?” If you rewrite the same sentences in Objective and Assessment because you’re not sure where it belongs… It’s not because you’re not skilled. It’s because you don’t have structure. Writing more won’t fix it. Structure will. What changed was building and refining clear Objective and Assessment templates. Then I started saving the acute care scenarios I document every week: Orthostasis. Post-op pain. Impaired safety awareness. High fall risk etc. Then I refined the language until it consistently tied intervention to function and discharge impact. 🔎 No more blank screens. No more second guessing. No more staying late because you care too much to submit something you’re unsure about. That’s exactly why I created The OT’s Guide to Acute Care Documentation. A structured system built specifically for acute care OTs. Clear Objective templates. Clear Assessment templates. Skilled phrasing tied to function. So your documentation reflects the level you practice at. ✨PELVIC FLOOR OT LIFE ✨ ✨ if I had a dollar for the amount of people who were very confused to learn that I had my doctorate in occupational therapy yet wanted to go into pelvic health… I could pay off my student loans pretty quickly😅 ✨ it always baffled me that occupational therapist were the primary therapy responsible for things like toileting, breathing techniques, energy, conservation, & adaptive modifications for daily life… yet everyone was perplexed to know that occupational therapist want to work in pelvic health. ✨ while our lenses may come from different educational backgrounds both PTS and OT is have the unique ability to look at the whole person. It’s how we should live our life. ✨ Occupational balance is achieved when an individual engages in the right amount, and variety, of occupations to support their health and well-being. Have you ever wondered how you spent your 24-hrs? 🧠 I remember doing this project in OT school where I had to log what I did in 24 hrs and then place my activities in these categories👇🏾 Rest Work Social Physical After logging in my activites, I created a pie chart to see where most of my time was allocated and I was mind blown. Of course, Work was majority of my pie as a student and physical was a good chunk too because I was on the track team, but I realized that rest wasn’t a big chunk, so that helped me realize your girl needed to sleep more. It’s important to be aware of your occupational balance because it is a continuous process that changes as you grow & live through life. As your goals, priorities, abilities, capabilities, obligations, and aspirations change, so will your definition of occupational balance. My occupational balance was different when I was an OT student, a new grad studying for my boards, and now as an OTR/L and that’s okay & that’s NORMAL. I used to spend more time studying vs. working. Ever since finishing OT school, I have made sure to go to the gym and with my work schedule, I do it before work around 4:30am. Sounds crazy, but it has been working for me since the gyms reopened in Sept 2020. That goes to show to check in with your occupational balance to avoid occupational imbalance. Most of our barriers of occupational balance are finances, awareness, and time. How do you keep occupational balance? How do you avoid occupational imbalance?
