A RARE SIGHTING OF A BABY WHALE SHARK OFF THE COAST OF INDONESIA COULD MEAN BIG THINGS FOR OCEAN CONSERVATION! Repost via @konservasi_ind and @elasmobranchinstitute "Researchers confirm Indonesia’s first recorded baby whale shark, and one of the smallest free-swimming baby whale sharks ever documented globally. Only 33 neonatal whale sharks have ever been documented. One year ago, local fishers in Saleh Bay, West Nusa Tenggara spotted multiple small sharks measuring 1.2-1.5 meters. Then came the biggest find of them all, or should we say smallest. They happened upon a baby shark measuring between 135 and 145 cm, and based on this size researchers estimate the pup was around 4 months old. These findings suggest something that’s got scientists at the edge of their seats. They could be on the precipice of uncovering the first whale shark pupping and nursery ground in the world! Konservasi Indonesia, Conservation International’s in-country implementing partner, and partners are now working with government authorities to establish the Indonesia’s first whale shark–based marine protected area in Saleh Bay. The area is poised to become a sanctuary for these gentle giants and will hopefully help advance critical insights into where and how the largest fish in the sea begin their lives." Little is known about where whale sharks are born or how they spend their early years, so these sightings are truly remarkable. Bull sharks, tiger sharks, and white sharks are the three species that are reported to have the highest number of bites on humans. While global annual fatalities are fewer than 10 people per year, there is still much we can do to reduce our chances of an adverse interaction. Understanding species specific behavior can help us to make informed decisions about where and when and how we choose to swim and enjoy time in the ocean, the sharks full-time and only home. Bull sharks are one a very few species of shark who can go and live in freshwater, this can sometimes lead to an increased chance of human conflict and humans have historically settled close to fresh water. These areas also tend to have murky water with limited visibility, which is possibly why bull sharks have not evolved to have large eyes. They are very responsive to sound, scent, and bio-electric signals which may explain why most bites tend to happen near shore in murky water, often in proximity of river outlets where females tend to pup (give birth.) Currently happy to be back in Fiji observing and filming bull sharks 😍❤️🦈❤️ I’ve seen bull sharks in many areas of the world but Fijian sharks just seem to be bigger, perhaps because sharks have been revered and respected for so long throughout Fiji’s traditional and current cultural practices. I think I dove with @aquatrekbeqa in 2004, 2014, and so I guess I’m on a 10 year to Fiji migration pattern 😉🦈 It makes me so happy to see the Fijian locals loving working with the sharks, the industry thriving, and the evolution of operation I’ve seen over the years 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Any GOOD operator continues to adapt and evolve the longer they operate, it shows they are learning and adapting to the needs and behavior of all species present. I love that in Fijian culture, sharks are sacred — protectors of the islands and symbols of strength, guided by the legend of Dakuwaqa. Today, sharks here support life beyond the sea — supporting eco-tourism that generates millions of Fijian dollars providing sustainable income alternatives for coastal communities that might otherwise rely on fishing while simultaneously inspiring ocean conservation 🦈🎥@juansharks

“Just like Moana, the ocean chose me before I could even walk. Now, I’m fighting to protect it. At just 3 days old, I was introduced to the ocean. My father, a certified scuba diver, made sure I grew up surrounded by the sea. By the time I was 3 years old, I was already helping him with weekly beach clean-ups. What started as a family tradition soon became my passion. I couldn’t ignore the reality; plastic waste was everywhere. It was suffocating marine life and polluting the waters I loved. At 5, I decided I couldn’t sit by anymore. I began collecting plastic waste from the ocean floor. At first, it was just small things, bottles, wrappers, and bags. By the age of 7, I had already removed over 7,000kg of plastic and ghost nets. I knew this wasn’t a one-time effort. It was a lifelong mission. As I grew older, I realised that it wasn’t just about cleaning the ocean. It was about raising awareness, educating others about the damage we’re causing. I started giving talks at schools, colleges, and community events. My goal was to inspire others to take action. And it was working. I took part in unique events, like underwater dance performances and underwater chess, to draw attention to the need for ocean conservation. In 2024, I swam across the Palk Strait, from Sri Lanka to India, in 11 hours and 30 minutes to raise awareness for the ‘Save the Ocean’ campaign. Every piece of plastic removed is a small victory, but it’s the hope of change that keeps me going. I hope that one day, the oceans will be plastic-free! Today, at 12, I continue to dive, collect waste, and share my message. People call me the ‘ocean’s little girl,’ but I see myself as its protector. The ocean chose me, and I will continue to fight for it.”

You may have noticed a few of our cownose rays have small tags attached to them! 🔖 This is a part of a study that began earlier this year to track cownose rays’ behaviour. The battery on these tags will last for approximately 4 weeks, and there is a plan to have a few more tag monitoring periods in the next year or so! Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is dedicated to ocean conservation and education 💙 We are proud to continuously take part in research and conservation initiatives with species such as cownose rays, sand tiger sharks, green sea turtles, corals, and more! #KeepThemSwimming

🚩Ummm hell no 🙅🏼‍♀️❌🐍 If you have been following along the last couple months then you already know that I had a lot of problems with this dive center for many reasons. This is just one example of things I wish I knew or could read about before I paid for a week’s dive package. Unfortunately there’s still places in the world where it’s accepted and wildly expected to touch and move wildlife for better photography. Every review online has said the owner was nice and the shop felt like family and many said they return every year. Sounded lovely to me but there was so many red flags with this dive resort. The owner was an older male photographer from France who had been diving for 40+ years. He was the type of guy that was actually blaming me for things going wrong in his resort. Calling me unlucky when his car broke down on the way back to the airport (my $100 shuttle service) pretty sure he would never listen or change when it comes to things like waking up to ocean conservation and teaching his local guides better. It’s safe to say I’ll never be returning there again. I had never seen a sea snake in the wild and just In shock of everything my guide was doing. For many reasons I couldn’t believe he picked it up! But apparently they are ver docile?!? #scubadiving #paditv #divephilippines #oceanlover #lookbutdonttouc

The ocean has always been a part of my life. It’s where I feel most at home, and where my respect for nature really comes from. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been closely working with @coralsense.bali getting involved in the hands-on work of protecting and restoring our reefs. Being able to collaborate with people who are deeply committed to this work feels like a natural extension of my own relationship with the ocean, a way to give back to the place that has given me so much. One of the best parts has been getting to share this with my daughter. Showing her the ocean, the people who care for it, and what it looks like to actively help protect the world we live in is something I hold close as a parent. This is just a small glimpse of what we’ve been working on. The full story, the people, the process, and the purpose, is coming very soon 🌊 - #OceanLife #CoralRestoration #ProtectOurOceans #NextGeneration #OceanStewardship ocean conservation | coral restoration | reef protection | marine life | environmental work | ocean legacy | father and daughter | life at sea | giving back to nature | CoralSense project

The season of movement is here! 🦈 In this OCEARCH update, our team shares that many of our tagged white sharks are now beginning their fall migration south. These migrations reveal how sharks follow water temperatures, prey availability, and seasonal patterns across the Northwest Atlantic. Every ping helps scientists better understand shark behavior, track long-distance movements, and guide ocean conservation efforts. Follow and track your favorite sharks in real time on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker App or online at ocearch.org.

The High Seas Treaty 🤩 is a historic global agreement to protect the ocean beyond national borders. These waters cover nearly half of our planet and until now had almost no protection. With 83 countries ratifying it, nations have agreed on rules to create marine protected areas in the open ocean, limit destructive activities, and better protect marine life. It is a huge step for ocean conservation, biodiversity, and climate stability. A reminder that when countries cooperate, we can protect what belongs to everyone. Next challenge: proper implementation and execution. @highseasalliance 🌊🐋
