At the @sustainablemarketsinitiative Summit, our Director of OceanOmics, Mike Bunce, shares how environmental DNA is helping us track life beneath the surface. By analysing genetic traces left behind in seawater, we can detect everything from endangered species to invasive ones, and understand how ecosystems are changing over time. Better data means better decisions for ocean health.

In the Pacific, there’s a Marine Protected Area roughly the size of California called the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA). MPAs are one of the most powerful tools science has shown can strengthen biodiversity, help ecosystems recover, and sustain fish stocks and coastal economies. Our work supports these outcomes by generating data and conducting high-resolution seafloor mapping, submersible biodiversity surveys, and water column sampling that provide baseline data on species distribution, habitat structure, and ecosystem health. These data sets help scientists and decision-makers identify priority sites and monitor ecosystem health in support of global targets like protecting 30 % of the ocean by 2030. The next decade will shape how much of the ocean is safeguarded, and how those protections are implemented and maintained.

🧬🦈🌊 New OPEN ACCESS paper out today! Environmental DNA (eDNA) is transforming how we monitor marine biodiversity — but sampling can still be expensive and logistically challenging. In our new study, we tested a simple passive gauze-based eDNA sampler (the metaprobe) against a widely used active filtration method. What we found: 🔬 Comparable species detections within biologically meaningful margins 📉 Consistent performance across field replicates 💰 Up to ~46× cheaper for single-use consumables Why do we care?? Lower-cost tools like this could help scale marine biodiversity monitoring, making it easier to study and protect ocean ecosystems. #eDNA #MarineScience #OceanResearch #BiodiversityMonitoring #MarineEcology

Runoff carrying sediment and excess nitrogen from fertilizers clouds coastal waters, blocks sunlight, and weakens coral resilience to warming oceans. The result? Increased disease and reduced recovery capacity for some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. A recent study led by Dr. Andrés Suárez-Castro highlights a powerful solution: reforestation. Planting trees near coastal regions stabilizes soil, reduces erosion, traps sediment — and even helps offset carbon emissions.
