New task. New picture. Don’t rush it 👌🏼 Ten dogs joined me for buried hides session, and every single one saw the task differently. Some dogs understood it quickly. Others needed more time… more sniffing, less movement, and space to actually work things out. And this is where I often see people trip up. When it doesn’t click straight away, the instinct is to push on. Add another hide. Make it harder. “Just one more…” But if the dog doesn’t understand the task… why are we still going? Buried hides require a different style of work imo. More methodical. More thoughtful. High intensity sniffing — not just movement. And for a lot of dogs, especially the more active ones aka spaniels, that doesn’t just happen. It has to be taught. Some dogs needed something completely different on the day as well — so that’s what we gave them. Why? - because that’s good training. Not forcing the outcome. Adapting the task so the dog can actually learn. Addressing areas that might need clarification before moving on. Pushing through confusion, you don’t get clarity — you get guessing. I want to allow dogs to understand it. I want dogs to try confidently, independently & with motivation because when that lightbulb comes on… you’ll know. Group place like this is one of my favorite sights. In this clip there are six camp dogs holding place while a piece of protection equipment rolls and clunks around the room and Olive heels through the middle of it all, working hard to ignore it. Annie the 17‑week‑old Havipoo is settled in a metal bucket. Freddie, a 15‑week‑old toy poodle, is holding his spot on a BOSU ball. Tater, a one‑year‑old cattle dog who was in danger of needing to be rehomed because she wouldn’t respect her dad and was bent on destruction, is calmly parked on her spot. Millie, a nine‑month‑old border collie who used to have zero confidence, is up on her box looking like she’s done this a hundred times. Ranger, a two‑year‑old golden, is learning to be a diabetic alert dog for his mama. And Annie, the five‑month‑old German Shepherd, is working on obedience now so she can also step into personal protection later. Different ages, different breeds, different jobs, all doing the same thing in this moment: staying where they’ve been asked to stay until they’re told to do something else, even while Olive and the protection equipment are trying their best to be distracting. This is what calm dogs in real life can look like in a room full of temptation. What camp means to Ned. This is a dog who has a busy brain. He goes a million miles per hour and struggles to decompress. After exercise, he is in need of something to hold onto. A ball, a toy or just something. If he doesn't, his jaw snaps the air. He is very much a working line type of dog. Similar to a Herder type. Constantly needing to expel energy or do something. He is bouncy, runs for miles and is in constant need for things to do. Therefore obedience is VERY important. If you're looking to get a working type for a family house setting. Please bear in mind, that even my lifestyle (a farm type lifestyle) struggles to keep up with him. Please buy a dog that matches your lifestyle, not just to match your little run around the block. Because unless you're willing to run 10k a day as well as manage obedience work throughout the day. They are not for you. Ned is lucky to have his family. So willing to put the money and time into him. Is that something you could do? If you needed a vacation or a surgery or something that requires care for your dog. It will not be cheap! You will need someone who can handle this much work to replace you when you're gone. And what if they're not available? Adopt a dog that suits the long-term lifestyle. Please don't shop for working lines and support the breeding if it's not something you can commit to.

The problem with dog parks... It's been a while since I last posted. One man band currently, difficult to do the dogs, capture the footage, edit the footage and post it all. But that's a me problem. Lets get back to common problems dog owners have. Mental pulling on lead, totally ignoring your recall (they're not but we'll come to that), anxious wreck/lunatic when you leave the home or go somewhere new... The issue with going to a dog park or renting a space and letting them run around manically for an hour is you teach them that when you let them off the lead they can run around manically for an hour. If you book these spaces and have no coherent and consistent plan for when you get there nothing will change. And with the recent change in laws relating to dogs and livestock most people will be spending A LOT of money renting spaces. Save your money, find a decent dog trainer.
