37 years ago today, President Reagan delivered his famous speech calling for the end of the Soviet-enforced division of Berlin. The fall of the Berlin Wall was a victory for freedom of movement and one important piece in a broader campaign against tyranny.   “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”   #onthisdayinhistory

October 1, 1986: Reagan honors Carter’s birthday and the art of civil disagreement. In 1986, at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Library on Jimmy Carter’s birthday, President Reagan highlighted a truth we often forget: strong disagreement can coexist with respect. Our differences—rooted in love of country and a commitment to tackling real challenges—aren’t something to hide; they’re a sign of a functioning democracy. “We are all Democrats, we are all Republicans, because we are all Americans,” he said, framing debate as a tradition, not a threat. And in honoring Carter, Reagan reminded us that public service leaves a mark bigger than any partisan fight—the White House belongs to the country, not the party. Disagreement is inevitable. Disrespect is optional. #jimmycarter #ronaldreagan #onthisdayinhistory #politics #civility

#OnThisDay August 8, 1974: President Richard Nixon announced he would resign from office, becoming the first and only president to do so. “I have never been a quitter,” he said in an evening address to the nation. “To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as president, I must put the interest of America first.” President Nixon’s political support had cratered amid the Watergate scandal and the U.S. House was gearing up to impeach him. “To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the president and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home,” he said. “Therefore, I shall resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow.” Gerald Ford, who was confirmed as vice president eight months earlier, was sworn in the following day as the 38th president of the United States, making him the only person to become president without winning an election for president or vice president. In South Africa, on May 10, 1994, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sworn in as the first Black president of South Africa. In his inaugural address, Mandela, who spent 27 years of his life as a political prisoner of the South African government, declared that “the time for the healing of the wounds has come.” Two weeks earlier, more than 22 million South Africans had turned out to cast ballots in the country’s first-ever multiracial parliamentary elections. An overwhelming majority chose Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC) party to lead the country. Mandela, born in 1918, was the son of the chief of the Xhosa-speaking Tembu people. Instead of succeeding his father as chief, Mandela went to university and became a lawyer. In 1944, he joined the African National Congress (ANC), a Black political organization dedicated to winning rights for the Black majority in white-ruled South Africa. In 1948, the racist National Party came to power, and apartheid—South Africa’s institutionalized system of white supremacy and racial segregation—became official government policy. With the loss of Black rights under apartheid, black enrollment in the ANC rapidly grew. Mandela became one of the ANC’s leaders and in 1952 was made deputy national president of the ANC. He organized nonviolent strikes, boycotts, marches and other acts of civil disobedience. • • • #onthisdayinhistory

Today, 83 years ago, the Senator Theatre opened with its inaugural film Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion.” It was segregated until desegregation. Before it closed in 1989, it was D.C.’s second-largest movie screen after Uptown Theater. Today, Senator Theatre’s facade remains in Ward 7’s Benning. The inside is now home to a beauty supply store and a @Subway. On its side is a Toni Morrison mural by local artist @keionaclarkart. Across the street is an @aniekanreloaded mural. #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #dchistory #igdc #popville #theatres #washingtondc #dcchasers #eastoftheriver #ward7dc

🤔 Did you know? #rp @austinkgraff 60 years ago today, the Beatles played their first U.S. concert for a large crowd in Washington, D.C. at the Washington Coliseum. Just over 8,000 people showed up to hear them play 12 songs on a snowy night. Today, the old Washington Coliseum building is the offices of the @NoMa.Bid and the city’s first @REI store where visitors can see posters honoring the Beatles’ concert. Outside the building is a historic call box honoring the Beatles by artist @Yen_Jason. (It’s fair to note that the Beatles performed at the Ed Sullivan Show in New York City before they played in D.C. That was their first performance in the U.S. with the D.C. concert being their first solo ticket concert for a large crowd.) #thebeatles #nomadc #northeastdc #igdc #onthisdayinhistory #onthisday #washingtondc #visitdc #popville #visittheusa #atlasobscura #dcchasers
