In my last reel, I shared non-traditional veterinary careers that exist beyond clinical practice.
A lot of you then asked: “But where do I actually find these jobs?” or “What should I search for?”
Here’s the key reframe: These aren’t always job titles you apply for. They’re fields vets can work in, across NGOs, governments, international organisations, research projects, and consultancies.
If you only chase the exact title, you’ll miss most opportunities.
Instead, focus on the field, the skills, and the problems you want to work on.
Here are some of those fields, and what they actually involve ⬇️
• One Health programme management
Designing, coordinating, and running projects that connect human, animal, and environmental health across sectors and countries.
• Zoonotic disease prevention
Reducing spillover risks through surveillance, prevention strategies, and collaboration between animal, human, and environmental health actors.
• Health systems strengthening
Improving how surveillance, laboratories, reporting, and response systems function, especially at the human–animal interface.
• Risk assessment & preparedness
Anticipating health threats, mapping risks, and supporting outbreak and pandemic preparedness planning.
• Science–policy interface
Turning research into clear, usable evidence that informs policies, guidelines, and decision-making.
• Stakeholder engagement & partnerships
Bringing together governments, NGOs, communities, researchers, and funders so health initiatives actually work in practice.
• Sustainable food systems
Working on livestock, food security, nutrition, and environmental sustainability using a One Health lens.
• Biosecurity & prevention
Focusing on prevention at borders, farms, markets, and ecosystems to reduce disease emergence before outbreaks happen.
• Implementation science
Understanding why good interventions or policies don’t always work in real-world settings, and how to adapt them to local contexts.
