Growing up in South OC and then years of living in North OC, these are the 5 things we find totally normal that outsiders don't get. 1️⃣ The Rain Panic. One drop hits the 91 freeway and the whole county forgets how to drive. If it rains for 10 minutes, we cancel plans and stock up on groceries like it is a blizzard. 2️⃣ The Time Warp. We don’t measure distance in miles, we measure it in minutes. 5 miles in Brea could be 10 minutes or 45. You aren't a local until you have questioned your life choices while stuck on the 57 or the 91. 3️⃣ The Disney Alarm. In Fullerton or Anaheim, you don't need a clock to know it is 9:30 PM. The nightly fireworks are our "time for bed" bell. 4️⃣ The Uniform. Whether it is a nice dinner in Newport or a grocery run in Fullerton, athleisure is the law. 😂High end leggings and a designer bag is officially a formal outfit here. 5️⃣ The Bubble Effect. As an Irvine resident myself, these things made NO sense until it all became a part of my daily life… 1️⃣ The most obvious… Teslas are EVERYHERE. Every parking lot looks like a tesla supercharging station. There could be (and there will be) 28 Tesla model Ys lined up in a row at a stoplight and no one will bat an eye. I think Rivians are next? 2️⃣ It’s normal for people to talk about $1.5mm attached condo as a decent starter home. Do you want a mansion in the suburbs of Texas or a starter home in Irvine? 3️⃣ It’s typical for a parent to put themselves on the waitlist at a few different Montessori programs and home daycares… if you don’t, you might be waiting months to a year to get your kid into the program you want. You want to skip the waitlist? Better have a sibling 4️⃣ In certain neighborhoods, HOA & Mello-Roos can be higher than someone’s rent. Do you know how long Mello-Roos typically lasts? 5️⃣ We don’t discuss distance in miles… we use minutes because the same distance can take 20 minutes or 40 minutes depending on the time of the day. Better than LA traffic though right? 6️⃣ It rains half an inch and people forget how to drive. Yes, we’re spoiled with sunshine almost 300 days out of the year. But that means you’ll see accidents and traffic built up when it rains just a tiny bit. What did I miss?
